Hello GJ,

This Craftsman Vise is on local CL about 45min drive (one way) for $25. Is this something to pick up and worth restoring? Any thoughts helpful...

Thanks,

Will

That is a light duty vise. You'll put a lot of effort into bringing it back to life and from the one picture, it appears that the dynamic jaw is bent. This is a sign of the vise being used beyond it's capabilities. Some call it abuse.

Personally, I would pass on that one unless you love it and have to have this one.

Only if you need a project and that will be a lot of work.

They are cool once restored however the asking price of 25 is on the high end due to the work needed.

Thanks I'll wait... Looking for an older vise but every time one pops up at a decent price it sells fast. What other sites besides ebay and CL would you suggest?

I get most of mine in online auctions not e-bay but search your local auction houses they all seem to be going to online bidding, farm auctions and Estate sales that do not list vises.

Will: some of us here at GJ have more than a few vises, but we still pick up a nice vise if it's a good deal so it won't end up in a scrap yard or to flip so go in your GJ profile and put in your location and maybe one of us has one you might like for a good price. also click on Avatar and download one of your favorite pics so you can have something under your name. also post up and ask questions or share some of your knowledge and get to know us because overall we are a pretty friendly group.

cheers and i'm not sure the dynamic is bent because those jaws are lining up pretty decently, but it does need some work. i do like old Craftsman vises though so i'd pick it up if cheap even for parts.

cheers

I fixed up a 4" version of that vise that was tossed out of my FIL's shop by his son. It just took some elbow grease and paint. It is a good tight vise, about equal to the Columbian D44 series with the formed steel slide. Plenty good unless you want to abuse it.

Always hard to tell from a photo. Some cameras are terrible for bowing/curving straight lines. I'm with DIF in thinking that it's a trick of the camera. The jaw faces appear parallel, even though the photo makes the slide look like a banana.

I've had 4 of those. 2 were bent just like that one. That's no illusion, the slide is bent. Those vises are weak and that one is rough. Save your money.

Check out your local scrap yards. Some will sell to you and some won't. It always amazes me what people will scrap. The local yard to me currently sells vises for 0.34 lb when they have them.
