craftsman vise

I got this craftsman vise off CL for $25, I like the size and the condition is pretty good for 1973 (can someone confirm that as the right year? It's made in Japan). I've been about 1/3 through the massive vise thread on here looking for ideas on mounting this to my bench, but I haven't seen any options that fit my needs. Because of how I use my bench, I don't want to permanently mount it on the benchtop because it could interfere with using my compound miter saw. So, I'm thinking of mounting it in front of the bench in a manner that i could move it out of the way if needed. I have some ideas using wood, but I don't like my vises moving and worry I would need something pretty bulky to be sturdy enough. Any ideas out there?

I mounted my Craftsman vice (a smaller, newer American made edition) on a 6/4 chunka something or other, with the bolt heads countersunk underneath. I just clamp it to my bench using stout Bessey F-Clamps (or sometimes my Pony's instead) whenever I need use it.

Thanks for the reply Jerry. I did see one of those, one thing I like about that kind of setup is that you can rotate the vise, which could be very useful. I'll search for those threads, I have no welding capabilities, I'm curious to see how they are constructed.

That's not a bad idea, Bikerdad, but I'm trying to get away from mounting things like that (running out of clamps!). I'm looking for a more permanent home, but if I do it right I could pull it out and mount it temporarily somewhere else they way you're suggesting, that would be useful.

You need a new home for your chop saw. You can take a B&D Workmate and set it up semi permanent then mount tool son mounting plate (Plywood) and add a cleat to the bottom that then gets clamped in the work mate.

build a "book case" the width of the mounting plates and "rack" the tools when not in use...
