I think it was the EE series that had the most problems. I'm a =V= lover, so I try to avoid the various versions of the G series. Sometime during the G series I started to notice the quality starting to fade. I don't know how the H series is.
Anything V is fine.
I have a set of G Craftsman sockets, don't have a lick of trouble with them. That's the older plain "G", not "G1" or "G2" or any of the "E".
I can always tell an older "G" series by the chrome. It has a gray quality to it, rather than a mirror finish. They stand out in a box of used sockets like a sore thumb!

I've got a bunch of g2 sockets, beat the piss out of them and no problems
I have a Craftsman 9 piece set of 3/8" drive 6 point shallow sockets (3/8" to 7/8") all with the -G- manufacturer's mark. I've had them for years. They came in a plastic holder which I still have. I use those 9 sockets more than any other sockets in my box. I don't have a single complaint about any of them. I reach for them all the time and usually first.

I believe the later G-series (G1/G2) are frowned upon a lot because of the later double detent design.
My sockets consist of -V- (metric 3/8"), -EE- (SAE 3/8" and 1/4" SAE/metric), and a handful of extras from a variety of series. The -V- series stuff I have is the nicest with my few -VV- and -G- being near identical. The -EE- items vary in quality; one of my 1/4" drive metric sockets has a stamping that isn't legible and the stampings on the rest aren't as crisp as the -V-, -VV- or -G-. Just to clarify my -EE- are not imported as the Craftsman Hand Tool Date Ranges thread suggests.
