I have a Craftsman 3/8" drive thin profile ratchet that's about 6 years old. It used to get used a lot the first year or two I've owned it. Now it pretty much just sits in my tool box. Probably hasn't even been used in the last 3 years. Just today though I took it out of my work box so I could have it for home use. I noticed there is a very large chunk of chrome missing from the side of the head. Is this something that would make it worthy for exchange? And does Sears give you a new tool for the thin profile ratchets or do they have rebuilt ratchets available?

At the sears store I work in there is a sign in the back telling associates to give customers rebuilt ratchets unless they request a new ratchet.

Just be cool about it and tell them it would make you feel a whole lot better if you just got a brand new one and I am sure it wouldn’t be a problem.

chrome peeling does mean warranty. Tell him you had a piece of chrome stuck in your hand and tell him to rub his hands in the area to see if he can get the chrome to peel. that stuff hurts for a week at least. find another dealer or send with a buddy and have someone else do it.

I had a 1/2 Craftsman, looked brand new but if you turned it it had a bad spot in the gear. Took it to the local Sears and tell them what it was doing. The lady took me to the ratchet display and handed me a new one. I have never had a warranty problem with the Sears by me, they take anything Craftsman that is broken, no questions asked.

So I got my ratchet replaced today. It wasn't exactly a great experience but it wasn't horrible either. The first place was I stopped at was a Sears Hardware. I walked in with the ratchet, a 13mm 3/8" drive 12 point shallow socket that was worn out, and a 1/4 x 8 Craftsman Professional screwdriver with a broken tip. The guy behind the counter called the guy on the floor to get me the socket and the screwdriver while he dug through the box upfront with the rebuilt ratchets in it. I go with the other man to get the socket and screwdriver. Got the socket but the screwdriver was out of stock. When I get back to the counter I see I'm about to receive the other style of ratchet. The round handle style that *****. I tell the man behind the counter that I didn't want that ratchet because it's not the same. So he then calls the guy on the floor back over to go get the thin profile ratchet from the case. This guy then inspects the old ratchet and asks what's wrong with it and why do I want it replaced. So I had to convince him about how the peeling chrome could be hazardous. He walks away and then came back about a minute later and told me it wasn't in stock. I just say no problem, I'll come back when it is in stock. Instead I just go to a different Sears. Walk in, grab the screwdriver I need from the rack, go up to the counter, ask for a different ratchet. The man behind the counter opens the drawer with the rebuilds in it. There are two of the 3/8" thin profile ratchets in it. He picks them both up and they're obviously in worse shape cosmetically than the one I'm exchanging. So he goes to the case, grabs a new one and hands it to me. No issues whatsoever.
