Hey guys, I am thinking about getting some Craftsman Wrenches from pawnshops. What is a fair price to pay at a pawn shop? I can get a new set for $9. Is there a good bargaining method?

Just tell them what they go for new. Though the ones for $9 are probably Chinese made ones. I never saw a set for less than $20.

Are you buying them to make a main set for personal use or a 2nd set for the trunk? I'd probably search for a nicer brand of tools if you can afford them -- SK, Williams, etc.. You can get them pretty cheap if you hunt for them just like hunting for Craftsman.

First off pawn shops are way over-priced (rule #1).
You can sometimes (key word) find a good deal.
If they have no clue as to the value of off brand tools you win (rule #2).
Craftsman, snap on Mac are like gold too their ears and the price goes up. (rule #3).
If you find a nice person (A nice Lady) better to deal with them.
Craftsman always had wrench set sales not sure what set of wrenches you are looking at.
If they are wanting more then $9.00 dollars you could show them the deal but chances are they will tell you to not let the door hit you in the **** as you leave, my thinking is they need to make some kind of profit to keep the lights on and pay the rent.

If you forget anything see Rule #1.

From time to time for shits and giggles I look at tools in my local pawn shops.

I usually leave just shaking my head. Craftsman for more than a new set costs. If your wanting craftsman USA look on ebay. A couple years back I filled in my craftsman sets while they were closing out USA stuff in the stores.

I prefer my S&K (new and old).

I never pay more than 0.50 to $1 each no matter size at mine for any brand. I bought a whole Walmart bag full for $10 and they gave me an electric weed eater for free lol... I bought a small shoe box kid size or ladies full of craftsman, sk, and snap on sockets and a bunch of other stuff along with craftsman wrenches and pliers and Mac pliers all for 1 each which I get a better deal if I get them in a box but my box was full.and I always get a free gift last time was a fit bit and time b4 that was an elctro therapy machine for pain lol... Even got a Budweiser beer Stein once because they don't have a tag for tools everything is on a computer but loose tools but it helps being a regular like me that goes 2 times a week and I've filled 6 tool boxes from them and I doubt I spent 100 bucks like I said 5 a box and you can put sockets in sockets and stack stuff just right to maximize space. I love that place as they are stupid when it comes to loose tools but over price any thing powered. I know of a flea market that sells them for 1 a tool any brand but snap on which is 5 but I always get a discount as I buy bulk.. I've never paid more than 5 for a tool ever except for power tools but got them 50 or less and I got all snap on and makita. Used tools are a buyers market as long as you know the right places. I have all USA tool pretty much except for my European tools I may have 500 in all my tools and I have a ton and my 1/2 impact sells for that used.. I'd say I got over 15g in tools at new price.. Good luck and happy hunting

I have no idea what the market might be in Springs or how many pawnbrokers are there.
Have you considered going an hour-and-a-half north on I-70 and checking out the market in the big city? I would think it's possible you may find a more competitive market.

Depending on what you're looking for, you can find nice -V- or =V= Craftsman SAE offset double-end box sets or "flat" double-end box sets or open-end sets on Ebay with starting bids at about $30-$35 right now.
I got an almost-complete set of VΛ Metric combinations from a guy on Ebay one night for about $20 bucks (along with a few other odds and ends.) (He said he needed money for cigarettes.)

It's all right time right place.

When you say you "got an almost-complete set of VΛ Metric combinations from a guy on Ebay one night for about $20 bucks", how are you defining "almost complete"? Craftsman metric wrenches go up to 32mm in size, and the large wrenches cost $20 to $26 each when new.

You want to do work or you want to fuk with wrenches? With the advent of the Sears China even the small sets are below a dollar a piece now and its as good as any of it since the 70's

As I recall it ran from 8mm up to 19mm. I drove over to Sears and bought two singles to fill the holes.

If I remember correctly, I also got in that batch a 3/8" drive ratchet, two 1/4" drive metric universal-joint sockets, a set of "picks", and a couple oddball open-ends. And now that I think about it, he wanted $20 for the wrenches, but when I met him in the parking lot of a C-store up in Edgewood we haggled and I gave him $31.00 and some change for the entire lot. Considering it was all brand new (except the 10mm combo) I figured I did okay.

Gotta love those end-of-the-month-I-need-money-for-cigarettes sales on Craigslist!

If you're going to go to pawn shops, buy stuff like S-K, Proto, Wright and Williams. Most of them have no clue what it is and will sell it cheap. Most of the pawn shops around me have the Craftsman stuff locked up in the same cases that they keep the truck brand tools in.

CM is SK, Willy, Easco among a billion other mfg brands.

It just has better brand recognition. I do Euro if possible but a mix and match set works if OCD and feel in the hand are less important.

I hit the pawn shops a lot looking for tools. I have not found many good Craftsman
USA tools in a good while. Got to many tool resellers on the speed dial to purchase all name brand tools. Last week I hit the Jackpot on Snap on OXE wrenches. Tool room had 3 shelves with 4 boxes on each row. Top row all tools $1.00 each. Got 9 snap on wrenches for $9.77 out of the top row. Was at the local flea market and had 2 booths loaded with Craftsman tools. Most sets going for $10.00

A friend of mine owned a pawn shop for 20 years. He based his tool pricing on 50% of the Sears catalog retail price. I don't know where he came up with this pricing, it might be industry standard for all I know. Very rarely did he have any good tools, but he always had a bunch of very cheap wrenches and sockets. I was always amazed at the folks that thought they were getting a great deal by paying 50% Craftsman for a socket or wrench that probably sold for less then they were paying the pawn shop. Also, his prices were retail and when Sears had a sale, the same wrench "new" was cheaper then the crapped out pawn shop offering. I recently purchased two sets of the new Craftsman wrenches. They look and feel just like my old wrenches purchased in the 70s. The only difference I can tell is "Forged in the USA" was replaced with "AE" which I'm sure is China. I have not used them enough to comment on quality, but so far they work as well as my other wrenches. We will see how they hold up. My point is if you want wrenches to work with, try the new Craftsman. The price is often .50 each when you find a deal and use points. If you are wanting vintage Craftsman, try EBay and the classified section on this board.
Regards,
John

Where is this "place" you keep speaking about Derek420?

Its called Dans Cash America Pawn on Lewis and Clark parkway in clarksville Indiana and shelbyville flea market in simpsonville Kentucky. My go to places, I was told about flea market and gave it a shot and tool heaven and has 6 huge long buildings full of vendors like over 400.but the first building has the good stuff.

* shipping costs may vary depending on your geographic location *

you will not beat this price on this set:

CRAFTSMAN 6-pc SAE open-end wrench set
3/8" - 1"
used
=V=
$24.95 + $6.40 shipping "buy now" ( $5.23 per wrench )
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Cra...:g:QxgAAOSwiDFYKiEC&item=371789491817&vxp=mtr

==

this one's a little more spendy but still a fairly good deal:

Craftsman 13-pc SAE combination wrench set
1/4" - 1"
used. (* see seller's notes for condition! *)
-V-
$49.99 + $13.65 shipping "buy now" ( $4.90 per wrench )
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Cra...354802?hash=item3d2b3bf572:g:DSEAAOSwal5YEMEq
(* this seller has a couple other sets that are fairly good deals *)

==

this one ain't bad if it doesn't get bid up too high:

Craftsman 7-pc SAE double-end box wrench set
3/8" - 1"
used
=V= (except 3/8" x 7/16" which is -V- )
$29.99 + $6.80 shipping now. 1 bid now. ends Sun. 11/20
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Cra...469572?hash=item5b2e84a7c4:g:mO0AAOSwA3dYKNbf
(* these old =V= offset DBE's are getting bid up to crazy prices - $80 or $90 or more * no reason to pay that kind of money there's no shortage of them. *)

==

unless you've got your heart set on Craftsman, and you don't mind a slightly mis-matched set of DBE's, you might want to take a look at this mixed S-K set @ 62.00 incl. shipping:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SK-Tools-7-...:g:xBAAAOSw4GVYKK0X&item=322328087805&vxp=mtr ( $8.86 per wrench ) ( * this seller also has a set of S-K open-ends cheap * )
