I am looking into purchasing one of the cheaper roller bearing roll canibets, but have a question. I do not like the currently offered drawer configuration. Does anyone know if it is possible to swap around the existing drawers in the Craftsman cabinets?

You can always order new slides and drawers from Waterloo (they make the craftsman boxes) an change the configuration.

I know someone here has posted the links in the past and how to do it but I can't find the posts at the moment.

Some you can, some you can't.

Takes less time to find out than to post asking about it.

With the drawers EMPTY (seen some stupid things in my time...) pull them out.
Look at the little levers on each slide. One thumbs up, the other down, the drawer pulls straight out.

After you get some drawers out of the way you will see the square holes that the slides go into. If you have 'extra' holes, you can move the drawers around.

The slides are easy to detach and reposition.

Now the bad news. After you get the drawers set the way you want, you may find they won't lock, or some won't lock.
On the lower priced boxes they put too few lock tabs on the locking bar(s).
So you may find that the lock tabs don't match up.
If this sounds confusing, it really isn't when you pull the drawers out and look at how the lock tabs on the bar(s) catch the back of the drawer.
Anyway, on a five drawer swapping them around takes just a few minutes.

I have done it and its not a problem
as has been said some drawes may not lock
you can fix this by welding a couple of tabs on the slider bar
so me I havent bothered because the box is in my garage so security is not a problem

I have a bunch of the craftsman griplatch bearing chests and although they seem to get no respect here, IMO they are nice and great for the $. You can swap drawers but locking will be an issue (search for more details) even on the griplatch units.

I am not sure I would recommend a cheapie though; years ago my dad had a cheaper cman chest and the bottom buckled from the weight. The griplatch ball bearing series are reasonably priced on sale. I have not had any issues with any of mine and they are three units high and heavily loaded

The one that I am looking at is the step right below the griplatch. It has ball bearing drawers.

Well, I bought the box today and all I can say is that it took less time to swtich the drawers and sliders than it did to attach the casters. Haha. I now have the configuration that I was looking for. Thanks for the tips guys!

It's really nothing special. I just swapped the 4" drawer to the top, and moved the top two 3" drawers down. I just wasn't sure if it could be done, but Craftsman makes this very easy to do.
