I just finished up installing the cabinet I found on Craig's List. $150.00 for the cabinets and about $100.00 on other materials for the installation. I used 5/8 melamine sheet for the counter top and put aluminum step edge around it to protect the edge from damage.

I couldn't be happier with the way that they turned out.

Dang that looks awesome. It is hard to believe you did all that for such a small amount of money. Do you have any pictures of your garage. We need to see more of this awesome space!

Cool! I scored a bunch of used kitchen cabinets on Craigslist too...gonna paint them flat black. Got some lowers too...yours look like I want mine to look! Like the door pull's too.

How did you build your base mounts? Or is it just part of the cabinets? They look like "Handi-Cap" style lowers...that's what I got. The kick panel section is "taller" than std cabinet for accessiblity. I liked them because they gave better room to walk/sweep etc...

What is the light on the side of the wall for? Is it for your air compressor? The rean I ask, is because I have a light on the wall for mine.

Thanks,
Gary

That looks like a very nice re-use of old kitchen cabinets ... clean, compact, neat.

Good to see that you put a knee space in the row for your stool. I like to sit at a bench on occasion to do detail work and it is very uncomfortable to not have a space where you can sit and put you knees under the bench top.

Too bad about the ugly blue column in the middle of your garage floor. I'll bet you really hate that!!!

I have the light over the panel and one other small light so I don't need to turn on the big bay lights if I going in the shop for some reason and am not going to work in there.

If you look to the right of the panel there are 3 small blue indicator lights. One is for the compressor, one for the furnace and the other is for the 5 gallon hot water tank. I don't run them when I am not working in the shop. The switches for each is the switch bank under the lights.

The cabinets were barely used cabinets out of a commercial building. They changed them out for a new tenant. So they are a more commercial style.

As far as the blue post goes..... that is on of my favorite "pieces" of the shop.... my car lift.

Cool. I only have one for the air compressor, I don't run it while I'm not in there either. BTW, your garage looks great.

I framed the bases with lumber then covered it with the left over melamine from the counter top. This brought the counter up to the height that I wanted.

what did you search on in craigslist - cabinets? Under what category?

I searched for cabinets in "all for sale" .... under $500.00 to eliminate rv's and such. I have been looking for probably 6 months for ones that I liked.

I check Craigslist regularly for such things but all I'm able to find are uber-expensive kitchen cabinets. I am not going to spend $15K for used cabinets for my shop. Sometimes having a high-end cabinet industry nearby is not an advantage.

All of the contractors I've spoken with tell me they don't want to sell the used stuff, they want to sell new and installed.

Very nice! What is your final height of the counter top? I am 5' 11" and am in between 38" and 40" on mine. Just can't decide which to go with.

I made them 41" to the top pf the counter.

You may want to consider what you will be doing on the bench when you decide on a good height. I also plan on building a metal bench that will be 36" tall. In our transmission/engine rebuild area at work they have metal benches that are 36" high this is a good height for working on bigger stuff. 41" seemed to me to be better for smaller work.

You also have to be careful that your uppers are not too close to the lowers. Mine are only 15 inches and that is a little close but I have counter space that has no uppers that I can use. When you go higher with the uppers, reaching the shelves becomes a problem. I kept my uppers on the low side so that I could reach the shelves without a stool.
