Just picked up a Snap-on top and Mac bottom box for.... $50! They are both well used but all drawers slide very well. Any idea on the ages or where to find date codes?

The former mechanic passed recently and worked for Zakia automotive. This was a local drag race team, specifically local Niagara Dragstrip. Pretty cool.

Sweet boxes, good deal with the keys to boot. Top is a snap on 50's KR-58 or 60's KRA-55 depending on year. It should be stamped on the back, lower right hand corner. Bottom mac box looks a bit newer, ~70's I'd guess. It too should be stamped year and model.

What are your plans for them, restoration?

A bit hard to tell from the pics, but they don't look too far gone at all. Totally restorable for a nice set of boxes.

......Should I use stripper or just sand these suckers?

It seems that you would probably use both methods. Stripper to get the bulk of the paint off and sanding to smooth out the surface in preparation for paint.
There are some very good acid free strippers out there that won't etch the metal at your local hardware store.

BTW...great find.

I'd say there's an argument for keeping that authentic patina (especially those groovy '70s stickers) rather than restoring them.

Then again, unless you knew or were related to the original owner, there's little sentimental connection. And some of that corrosion really needs to be handled before it gets any worse.

Oh, and lets make it official with a hearty "YOU ****".

I thought about keeping the patina but your right I didn't know the man so no sentiment there. The wife was going to throw out the box but decided to put it into the garage sale last minute. I saw it online and begged for her to hold it until I got there. Guys were fondling it when I showed up lol.

Nice find! With good drawer action (as you mentioned) that's a large part of the battle of a restoration already done. You've got the emblems, the SO cover handle, and they look really straight. No chasing down parts is needed. Completeness is a big thing I look at when buying vintage anything. Chasing down obscure parts *****. Those will be sweet after some cosmetic TLC.

And you definitely **** on the price. Having the keys is worth $30 you won't have to spend!

I'm thinking about disassembling them and having them soda blasted by the shop down the road. Not sure what they would charge, we shall see.

Woot, post 100, lol

Looks like 57? Going to have to do a little more sanding.

You're looking at least $600 to blast and powder that set. Some places around me don't even want to take toolboxes cause they're a pita bog time.
