I'm 43. I work as a senior level software developer and technical lead for a multi billion dollar company. I'm doing just fine professionally. I have to communicate with people all over this country, and outside the country, every day face to face, through emails, phone calls or over instant messaging which is the personal computer equivalent of texting.

I'm the one who uses all these different communication mechanisms every day. You're the guy complaining that the world doesn't use phone calls for everything, because that's how you want to communicate.

But I think the world revolves around me? Now I'm wondering if you're actually a troll.
I see you are getting quite defensive there. I prefer to do business with people who actually are willing to talk to me, not hide behind their iWhatever and refuse to call me when I politely ask them to (usually because, as I explained already, I AM DRIVING, and I don't do texts while driving).

So we'll just agree to disagree, and I won't buy anything from you on CL. Peace.

Oh, do you also happen to drive a BMW by any chance?

I'll accept email, text or calls for the first contact, but I really prefer calls after that. My sister in law will text my wife and carry on a whole 5 minute conversation. My wife prefers an actual call, but the SIL likes texting better.

When I was clearing out my house to sell it a while back, I used Craigs List as well as a tag sale. I had to deal with a few Craig's List people that had broken english, didn't show up, etc. All in all I sold what I needed to, and most of it went smoothly. What blew me away was one day I looked in my "Junk" e-mail folder and wow, I had more *** scammy e-mails generated through Craig's List than I could believe! Never expected that!

eggsactly.

I blow off idiots with broken english or pushy jerks immeadiately

lowballers dont get a responce.

as for emailing, if you post an ad, responding with an email should be easy

long winded negotiations and bull usually end with nothing.

quick and easy is usually the mark of legitimacy

my 2 cents.

Yeah, meet in a public place.

Er, um, well...

I buy and sell on Craigslist all the time. Concerning the communication methods, I use them all. Todays most popular medium seems to be email with texting next. I am fine with both of those as I too have a background in the technology sector. I am fine with voice calls as well but I find they tend to take more of my time. I am very busy with personal projects and work and some folks will ramble on and on. My parents raised me to try to be mindful of others. I really dont want to be rude and cut them off but texting or emailing invites more pointed discussion with less wasted time. Does anyone else feel the same way?

+1

If I'm selling something on Craigslist, I'll take the time to have a lot of pictures, along with a detailed description, to the point that if someone has a question, they should be able to find the info they need in the ad.

Still, there always seems to be a good chunk of folks out there that want to call you and ask a question that's clearly answered in the ad, or just call you and proceed to talk for 15 minutes straight about nothing. You're interested in buying my truck? That's great. I don't need to hear your dissertation on how Obama and the Masons are teaming up to put fluoride in our drinking water to defeat the republicans.

Not saying that everyone who calls is a time-waster, however I agree that texting and e-mail does allow a more pointed discussion.

A couple of my personal observations, and I buy/sell quite a bit on craigslist.
Buying:
- I prefer initial communication by text, if the've listed their cell number
- after that, I want to physically speak on the phone with them
Selling:
- I never list my cell, because I just don't have time during the work day to field countless initial inquiries
- Initial inquiries to my postings must e-mail me, at my personal e-mail address
- I review all e-mails once I get home, and have completed all my other daily commitments
- After my initial response, if they sound legitimately interested, then I'll give them my cell and tell them to continue communication via text, but I remind them that I'm usually pretty busy with work during the day
- I always post several good pictures showing different views of the item I'm selling, and post all the details of the item and the expected transaction details (payment, negotiations, etc)
- but despite the details being listed, most people will ask questions that are already listed, they just simply don't read the entire description
- I'm assuming this is because a lot more people than I realize, use their phone as their computer, and don't always use an actual desktop or laptop
- I have no issues buying or selling and meeting at someone's home, or my home. But I'm 6'-3", decent size and carry concealed everywhere I go. It's usually pretty easy to detect a bad situation before you get too deep, you just have to know what to look for, and be able to identify the signs
