What do you all feel is fair on pricing tools that are still made?
For example say a power tool can be bought new at Lowes for $200, what is fair to ask for a like new tool? Same exact tool.

I have my thoughts but it always seems like when I am buying they want new price and when I am selling they want less than half price.

Private sale, no returns, no warranty, no recourse. You need a decent discount over new.

50-60% of new?

Remember Lowes is going to put it on sale for 20% from time to time anyway.

It all depends on how quick you want to sell it.

The best deals on CL are gone in hours, if not minutes.

If I'm selling, I want it gone as quickly as possible to minimize the amount of CL BS I have to deal with.

This is EXACTLY what I tell someone who's selling as you described and then I offer 50% flat.

Just bought a Protig 165 off Letgo that way. Guy was asking $500 "firm" for a $700 machine. It was brand new, box was open but it was untouched. The guy was given a bigger machine by a family friend and lost his receipt. He turned me down at first, but contacted me 2 days later and said ok.

I've been putting things on CL for a few years now. Sales really seem to **** lately. I have good stuff and pretty cheap. I will agree that some things do sell very quick. I've had a few items sell within 25 minutes.

Craigslist is nothing but scammers if you're trying to sell. I only use Facebook marketplace now. The problem is 90 percent of responses I get are in Spanish even when I put "ENGLISH ONLY. NO HABLO ESPANOL " In the title of my ad.

C'mon. If I saw that in the title I'd be tempted to run something through Google Translate with a choice reply.

Especially on a Saturday evening with a couple adult beverages in me and nothing else to do.

When I sell high demand tools in new condition I usually start at about 75% of the best price I can find elsewhere. If brand new in the box, I won't come down from that by much unless I still have it in a couple days. I usually end up a bit closer to that 60% when the guy's in front of me, cash in hand. Tools that aren't so high demand, I don't expect to do much better than half, depending on the value. With a higher dollar item, I'd expect to get a better percentage of new price.

Here in AZ I find that I can find things at lower prices in the big city (Phoenix) vs. up where I am.

Far as scammers go, the worst thing I get when selling is someone asking kinda stupid questions (is it still available when a states it is if the ad is up). And I see very few ads in Spanish or any other language.

I'd say it should be 50% to 60% of the store price, not that many sellers actually go that low.

This is the way I feel. I'm fortunate to be able to afford new but if I can get it in good condition used I'll pay 50%. If I break it then I'm sol and will either buy it new (self warranty) or decide I really didn't need it.

One guy, who I’ve bought from, puts 2 or 3 pictures of completed ebay listings next to the pictures of his item, and asks exactly half of the ebay price. THAT is how to sell.

In my area (Bay Area, Ca) if you want things to sell fast 50% retail is good. If you don't mind waiting weeks/months to sell 80-90% of retail will sell eventually, unless you have a lot of other sellers selling the same items for a good discount.

People aren't browsing the rest of Craigslist like they use to, like when they were waiting to here back from the personal section. :lol_hitti Wonder how much traffic CL lost after that.

You have to remember, most people are shopping on CL because they are a bargain hunter. Now I regularly sell tools, but you really need to get a super deal to begin with, to really worth the time. Luckily I got met several people that regularly asked what new I had. They were willing to pay more than 50%, and sometimes had requests. Sometimes I had requests, and knew if I could get new off eBay + a coupon/cashback, I'd make enough to cover the hassle and would keep them buying other stuff, as well as refer to others.

Just bought a Jet 14" bandsaw off CL. paid $400 with a dolly. It would have cost $1000 at my local wood workers store after adding tax. It's one of the earlier white models.

Only idiots are going to waste their time with buying used stuff at retail or slightly below retail. I'd much rather wait for something to go on sale in store. For me, anything used has to be 10-20% below sale prices to interest me on craigslist.

Shouldn't the same apply to GJ classifieds?

I recently made an offer $20 below asking on an item listed for $140 which can be had for $199 brand new(not counting intermittent sale prices) and the only reply I got was "no"
No counteroffer, nothing.

I guess about everyone thinks along my thoughts that about half of retail. I think some depends on the type of item, as somethings you can be sure what you are getting but others carry more risks.

I state in all my ads that "if you email me a lowball bid I will delete it without replying. Still doesn't stop them.

In my experience, the majority of the stuff sold here in the classifieds is stuff that holds its value better than most of the stuff being sold on CL, and, in general, I'd trust a lot of the folks here selling stuff more than I'd trust randos on CL.
