Feeling pretty good about a score I found on craigslist for some Oxy/Acetylene items.

2 - Acetylene tanks
2- Oxygen tanks
1 - Cart
1-50 ft hose
1-25 ft hose
1 Torch gun
2- Regulators

... All this for $100 dollars.

Fired them up and gave it a test run, I havent used a torch since one of my basic shop classes I took some years ago. But practice makes perfect.

What do you think this stuff is worth ? The regulator only probably costs 100 bucks no?

Since it came with 4 tanks, 2 of each... I have an entire other set for backup ( i'll never use that much gas to suffice needing a back up ) Or i guess for sale )

I live in a farming community and that'd be a great buy at a local auction. Here you have to have papers showing ownership/certification of the bottles to get them exchanged for full ones. You might check on that.

At auctions between here and NY, the cart, torch, regulator, and hoses are usually $25-50. The tanks may be where you made out money-wise if they are all full. Sorry, but used tanks are effectively worthless as most suppliers wont refill them unless you are the original buyer and they came from that company specifically. I have a friend who moved cross country and Airgas in the new location refused to fill tanks bought from a different location. He had to return the old tanks to the previous location and was issued a credit for new tanks at the new location.

It looks like those bottles have their original owners' names on the neck rings. This could mean they're rentals that the seller didn't have the right to charge money for. You might have trouble getting them refilled. Then again, you might not. It varies a lot by region.

Are the titles within their hydro dates? If not, you might have to pay to get them recertified. Then again, some places do that for free.

In any case, it's a good deal you got on the lines and the torches.

As stated, the tanks are gonna be difficult to fill unless Middlesex Welding Sales is near you. However, even if you can't fill them, you've got enough gas and O2 to last a pretty long time. The Victor regulators are a score as is the cart, hoses and cutting torch. Did you get any welding tips with it? Anyway you cut it, $100 is a score!
You truly ****!

Jack, im not sure on the hydrostatic test dates, there are some stamps there, but who knows if they are current or not.

Evintho, No extra tips or accessories

It does look like they are all rental tanks, Oh well - still a pretty good deal, hopefully i can get a decent amount of life out of what is left in them.

I picked the two heaviest ones to put on the cart.

The oxygen has just under 500 lbs left in it
&
the acetylene has about 40lbs left in it

not quite filled, but something.

Any idea on what the PSI is when full on each tank?

what a score
as per re-filling tanks, by the looks of it, best case will require hydro-testing (a few bucks), and worst case is they won't fill them...anyway, figure you got over a hundred $$$ worth of gas and the torch, regulators, etc was a bonus.

I've never had any issues with getting tanks swapped even if there is a different name on them. If they are out of hydro test I've been charged 35$ for the retest but that's it. The welding supply here will also allow you to swap sizes and types and only pay the difference.

both are about 25% full, the hydro on the oxy should be in the last 5ys, if I am not mistaken because it is a high pressure tank . it would read something like this 6*2011 if done this month. There may be a problem with ownership, but you came out pretty good even without the tanks.

At one time I owned / operated a Muffler Shop - I still have a small Oxy/Acetylene set up. Here in my area {Tampa Bay, Florida}, I've never had any problems swapping empty tanks for full tanks.

At the Muffler Shop the tanks were always rented.. I never actually bought a tank then. When I switched suppliers - the new supplier picked up the old tanks when empty and gave me filled one's from their shop. I never had to return a tank to it's origin... Could be the suppliers did that among themselves - I don't know.

With my small tanks - I did buy them. But I've never been ask for proof of ownership - the welding supply shops just take the empty and hand be back a different tank that is full.

Looking at the condition of everything - I'd say you got a heck of a deal. At one time Victor was one of the better names. Also keep in mind that can have to regulators and torches rebuilt at a reasonable cost if they are high enough quality to warrant keeping.

Since it's been a while ago that you last had a gas set-up - - by all means do google Oxy/Acetylene Safety Tips - and go over them carefully. Shut the valve on the tanks off - and open the valves to the hoses to bleed them empty - when not in use. Pressure gauges should read "0" / "0" when the set is not in use.

Above all - do be careful - things get very hot when your welding on them ;-)

FWIW,
Carl B.

Made the deal even better today

I sold the two smaller spare empty tanks for 100 bucks!

So I basically got the entire setup for free.

double score.

Well, since you sold them, I guess I don't have to advise you that you might want to chain them to the wall.

Good score.

Yea , that would of been a good idea...

any other saftey precautions for the tanks that i still have that Im using on the cart, ... well... besides getting caps for them?

I bought a set of bottles, and when I went to get them filled at Praxair they pointed out that the oxygen bottle had another company's name stamped into the neck and they'd have to return it to them. A buddy of mine worked there and got me hooked up with a lease bottle of the same size for around twenty bucks a year. Still not owned outright but it probably would have cost me more than that to hydro test the one I bought!

The acetylene tank was small so they just swapped it for me.

I paid $200 for my rig including getting the bottles filled so I'd say you got a good deal!
