How good of a deal is this? Poster is asking $1250. Im not really familiar with snap on welders, Im not convinced the extra pricetag is worth it, but used at this price I might consider it.

What should I ask about over the phone and look for in person to make sure Im not getting a broken/garbage welder? This would be almost a 4 hour trip for me to pick it up and bring it home

I'd say since your driving so far your offer is 1000. Ask about the leads, the condition, any kinks or cuts. Ask how old it is, how long it sat, if it had/has a cover. And make sure all the leads are there. For the mig and the tig. It looks like they are.

The few people I've talked to that have snappy welders don't complain about them. But the 1200 price tag seems decent. I'd probably go after it if i had the money of course ha ha.

Snap-On tools are awesome. Their welders are rebranded product from someone else, and are not considered especially good. In your shoes, I'd pass and keep an eye out for a good Miller, Lincoln or Hobart.

I agree with Jack, snap on welders are always over priced (in my opinion), compared to what you can purchase from Miller or Lincoln. One thing that Snap on does brag about is their duty cycle. They usually rate the output of the machine for 100% duty cycle, thus their 185 is really a ~250 amp machine. So comparing the Snap on 185 to a miller product you would be looking at a MM252 or the like

If you could purchase it for $1000 I would say it is a pretty good deal. One thing you may want to consider before purchase though. Check with your local welding shop to see if they can get you parts for a snap on welder. No so much hard replacement parts, but consumables such as gun liners, contact tips, drive rolls and such.

Just a quick look through your local CL, here are a few you may also want to consider depending on your needs.

My so driver carries replacement welder parts on the truck. I'm not sure what pricing is for liners/tips, gun parts. But If it's rebranded I don't see a huge issue with finding some. Or possibly upgrading to a different gun.

My SO guy had one of those a few months ago, he left it at the shop to store it/see if we wanted to buy it. I think he was asking $800.

I tried it, and I wasn't terribly impressed with it, but I kind of **** at welding. We ended up with a 350P, which helps me not **** so much.
