Not sure if this is exactly the right place, but hopefully it is close enough.
I'm in the market for a small toolbox, and this listing came up near me.

This is exactly the size and type I am looking for, but I am not sure if it is a good deal. Also assuming it is, if I go see it in person is there anything I should look for in particular? Thanks so much for the opinions.

That is a nice box, but keep in mind the Kennedy boxes have terrible re-sale value. I'm not 100% sure but that does not seem like a bad price. Make sure the slides are not worn out on the roller cabinet, and that all the handles are there and in good condition on the top. Some parts are available from Kennedy still, but they are expensive. I have a couple of the smaller Kennedy boxes and would definitely consider that if it came up locally.

It could be a really great deal, or it could just be okay, largely dependent on what is inside. There is simply not enough information in the one picture to know very much about it. Personally, if that was local to me i would go check it out with cash in hand if I liked what I saw inside. I am afraid I do not recognize the box, someone will probably be able to tell you exactly what it is and what it is worth. Generally a standard older small box isn't going to bring that much alone unless it's a name brand.

I have the Kennedy version of the top chest,a model 526.These are Craftsman boxes made by Kennedy. The top box is a Machinist Chest not a regular top chest. If you are truly looking for a"small"tool box, then this rig might work for you.The bottom box is a full size chest and should have plenty of storage room even for large items.I'd say the things to look out for is if all the drawers work properly and that the boxes will close up and lock properly. In your area rust is a concern so I would look for that too.If there are no keys or the locks are boggered up,they can be easily replaced, but the cost should be factored into the deal.

Just for a comparison I bought a roughly same size Mac bottom, an older (when they were good) Craftsman topper, with a Matco spray can shelf and folding shelf for $250. I don't know if I'd pay $250 for the one you're interested in.

If the storage works for you and if it's in good condition then it seems like a good deal.

(I saw a similar bottom box yesterday at an estate sale and it was $400)

Kennedy's are good boxes but drawer sizes and layout work better for machinists. The top box really doesn't hold much.

These are well made boxes for small items but they have small drawers. For regular mechanic tools like wrenches and sockets, it is hard to beat the Harbor Freight boxes.

I say that is a nice box for 250 if you want it for punches, chisels, drill bits, files and such.

Thank you all so much for the responses. I am definitely looking for a machinist box, the small item storage is what I am going to be needing. The problem is I don't need it right now technically, so it would have to be a pretty good deal for me to keep it in my apartment for the next 3 years...
I'll contact the seller and try to see what is in it. Thanks again for the guidance

GET IT! That's a really good deal for a US built Kennedy. Who cares if someone got "theirs" for free. Make an offer of $200 and see if he'll bite.

You can't go to HD and buy a Chicom Milwaukee knockoff box for near that.

Plus it's what you need for size, and layout, what other reasoning do you need?

Just make sure you ask about the usual stuff, corrosion, what's included, liners?, dents and paint wear. Good luck.

I would buy it. If you can get the price down some, that would be nice. I would still buy it at the $250. They just don't come around that often. You say you won't need it for another 3 years, but it may be 5 or 6 years before you come across another one that is local to you.

Yup, one is available now and for a good price. That is worth someone as well.

We'll, I gave the guy a call, and he said somebody else had inquired about it earlier so it looks like that's that, unless the other guy falls through.

Unexpected Update: So I ended up getting the box after all! The other guy who was interested apparently didn't want the tools, so I got them. the box looks like its in pretty good shape, one of the drawers in the bottom box looks a little rough on the inside, and a couple of felt liners are missing, but other than that its all functional.

Now what is inside is what is great! I got: End mills (a little beat up), ~5 slitting saws, ~6 Large carbide burs, a bunch of drill bits (looks like this guy sharpened his own, and well too), parallel plates, blocks, and angles, mini abrasive wheels, hones, hammers, files, dies, and too many taps to count. I feel like a kid who bought the candy store!
Now pics!

I don't suppose anybody knows about how old this box might be?

And that is where the money can be made with these older boxes. The Sears logo makes it 70-80's ish, IIRC.
