craigslist vise

I recently picked up this vise on Craigslist for 30 bucks trying to decide what to do with it and what is history or quality is.

Wilton Shop King. IIRC, they were made in the late 40's, through the early 60's.
Not especially valuable, but not a bad deal for $40.00 since many of them are missing the pipe jaws.

They're not terribly heavy duty, but they do have style.

Don't use jelly.
Use vasoline.

Grats on the Shop King! It's a light duty vise and isn't much of a money maker to resell. Yours is a nice example and will work with some grease on the screw or you can take it apart and refresh the whole enchilada. Totally up to you.

I decided that if this going to be setting on my bench for the next several decades it should probably look nice so I am going to try to do a full restore. I started attacking it with a wire wheel. I've got about about 1.5 hours in on it so far and figure I need about another hour with the wire wheel. I can't seem to figure out how to get out the lead screw it looks like a pin that I cut get out with a punch but that doesn't seem to work. Any help? Any other sugestions? I plan on soaking the lead screw and handles in vinegar for a while when everything apart.

if you mean the pin in the middle of the "C", you cant use a punch and hammer to get it out. if it went through, the screw wouldnt turn.... it would be locking it in place.

my guess would be that if the screw doesnt just come out, then there is a groove in the screw, and each of those pins keep it where its at, but allows it to spin freely.

i have never completely disassembled a vise like that, so i dont really know. just what i would assume. someone here will know the correct dis-assembly.

Yeah I kind of figured that after looking at it and thinking about it. Do you have any idea how I would get it out ?

Hmm, that does seem strange. How tight is the pin in there? Any chance a STRONG magnet would get it out?
