I have tried to not join in with the CRAFTSMAN bashers, but DING-DANG..... I went to my local sears today to trade in my 15yr old,well used 3/8 in ratchet, knowing i would end up with a china replacement, but WOW, what a P.O.S. Used to tear down a dirtbike that im working on at home. Real sloppy, but still drags somehow, and auto-reverses constantly. Sears doesn't owe me anything, i got 15yrs good service out the one i turned in, just hate to see the CRAFTSMAN brand go out like this....

You should have demanded that your USA ratchet be rebuilt.

That ratchet you have now really just needs some good lube in it, makes a world of difference.

Not sure if it's the same everywhere, but I just took one of my toolset 1/4 ratchet to the local ACE hardware to trade in. About a year ago they started carrying craftmans tools. I noticed that the normal 1/4 ratchet was out of stock they only had the thin profile 1/4 ratchet. I figured they'd give me a raincheck, not only did they not give me a raincheck they just gave me the thin profile 1/4 ratchet instead. While I was there I took a look around, most of the craftsman tools they stocked that I check are all made in the USA, so if you have a local ACE hardware you might want to check them out.

Same thing happened to me. I took a 1/2 drive ratchet back and they tried to replace it with a crappy Chinese version. I told them that this wasn't acceptable to me so they gave me a Thin Profile instead. It was made in Taiwan at least.

When I go in I insist on having the Rebuild kits given to me. It usually takes a few minutes of talking to the right people. When I tell them I do not want one out of the drawer that has been rebuilt I WANT MINE that has served me well for MANY years. All I need is the guts. Then repeat..."All I need is the guts!" They still stock the kits that they used to give for free but now you have to have your Ratchets with you. They will still give them for free they just do not make it public. Once you know where the guys door is that rebuilds the Ratchets just go there first and knock. They don't have to do the rebuild and it is usually fine with the guy that rebuilds them. Hell all he has to do is give you the kit and he is usually fine with that. At least this is what I have figured out over the years of getting the rebuild kits. Just got one of each 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" a few months ago. Took me many trips and talking to basically everyone in the store to figure it out though. Most all of the new employees they are hiring ain't worth a toss and I'll be damned if I am going to give up my Ratchet that I have had since I was 16 for some POS.
