Ok, I was watching a local online auction of tools and inventory of an electrical contractor that passed. Most stuff sold as expected but this tool box.

This lot was just the top chest no keys and no tools included. The box was beat to hell the top lid was out of whack by at least 3/8" and did not shut. Scratched and dented. Ya just look at the pictures. It looked worse in person when I went and inspected the lots.

If I had the bottom box and wanted a matching top box, I might go as high as $75

If I was just picking up an extra place to stash small tools maybe $50

But the way you set it up, I'd say it want for double my high bid...

(I went to and bid on a few vises at a going out of business machine shop sale last week. Old vises went for about double what I thought they were worth. But huge lathes went for scrap prices or less.)

I have watched crappy old boxes go for $300 or better at auctions around me. Crazy considering you can get a shiny garage box that'll look nice in the corner for that at about any store. That one really shouldn't have gone for more than $75, especially if it looks even worse in person.

This is why I don't really bother with auctions. You have all these shows like storage wars and auction hunters that glorify the magical unicorn scores like "I opened this shoe box in and there were 10 17th century GOLD DOUBLOONS"

What ends up actually happening is you get inflated auctions where even off brand chinese tools get sold for big bucks to the person that has no clue on what an actual value it is.

There was 34 bids placed on this POS

The winner did not buy the tools that were in it or the rolling cabinet.

I go to Equipment auctions on a weekly basis and I am amazed at what some folks pay for items. Almost every auction place have planted bidders pushing the bid up. Go to enough auctions and you will recognize these people at other auctions doing the same thing. I was at a auction a few weeks ago when a Miller Bobcat went on the blocks and 3 people got caught up in the bidding and paid 3750 plus the 3% buyers premium for a old machine with no leads.

I surf a lot of auctions myself. They are weird affairs. Stuff seems to either go for pennys on the dollar or more than the price of a new one.

Auction fever strikes again!

I used to attend auctions with my dad way back in the 1980s (where he sternly warned me to keep my hands/arms down at all times, LOL), and even then, the prices were beyond stupid on some items.

Case in point (remember, 1980s pricing): non-running old chain saws were commonly selling for $100-150.

Doubtful. Most estate sales/auctions I've ever attended it always looks like the family has already claimed anything that had great sentimental value.

I've only been to one auction in the past 4-5 years, and it was silly what people were paying for small hand tools.

Totally doubt that, only thing I can think of is some people thought it came with the tool that were in it. The tools were not included and that was made clear.

Even with the tools that were included I would not of paid that. Tools were scattered through out the boxes with very little organization. From the looks of the tools they were picked through prior to the auction.

I stay away from auctions when it concerns tools. Why? you ask, because here in Kansas you get one of two problems. Jackasses that drive up the price just for thier amusement and number 2, some of the auctioneers out here will have someone bid up the price. Pretty dirty if you ask me

Auctions are a waste of time for this specific reason. If there is nothing inside that box, I'd pay $30 tops.

I find some good deals at some local online auctions, but it does take some time and I probably get outbid at a ratio of 10:1 on most things. I'm usually bidding on brand new open box or scratch/dent type items.

Unless it's an item I absolutely need I usually keep 50% of retail price depending on condition as my limit.

I wouldn't even have thrown a $5.00 bid on that upper box, because I don't have a need for it or the extra space, but I could see $30 being a fair price for someone.

I won a brand new Proto (made by Vidmar) box with no damage for $261 a few months ago which I thought was a steal https://www.grainger.com/product/PROTO-Red-Rolling-Cabinet-53GM70

But I've seen dented up Westward boxes (Grainger's imported house brand) bring nearly as much.

Biggest thing is day to day, week to week the prices really do vary, it's best just to be educated about what you're bidding on and know your limit and not get caught in a bidding war.

I was bidding at a gun auction on a BRNO 358Norma and cut off at my point. I think the owner out bid me because he was packing up some other rifles and didn't look too happy when I congratulated him. I enjoy turning knives.
