Creative uses and projects for metal card files?

Anyone have any interesting or practical ideas for metal Card File drawers? I ask because I scooped up these today.

Being card files, they have the annoying open drawer backs but that's easily remedied.

Ideas, suggestions?

Depends as to how the drawers extract, straight out or have an obstacle ramp to negotiate?

Probably need containers inside the drawers if similar items need to stay separated.

At this size a full drawer should still be manageable but you have to take steps to avoid injury if wearing flip-flops.

I’m in two minds seeing one cabinet missing from 40 and another with an odd colour front.

OCD rules. perhaps 13 x 3 is a possibility?

Otherwise an excellent purchase IMO.

YMMV

The drawers aren't ideal for removal.

13x3 could work. I was thinking of a 5x7 or 6x6 arrangement. They have tabs to connect vertically, but maybe a bunch of thin cheap neodymium magnets in between to keep the columns stuck together.

I have a couple I store grinding and sanding disks in. But with that many I would be looking for cheap plastic bins to put in them for nuts/bolts/screws/terminals/plumbing stuff/etc. But I also hate how they usually are crappy to open.

Here’s the system I’ve consolidated on, several generations from the same maker all interchangeable.

Inside the drawers either plastic egg shell style organisers or a certain cutlery drawer liner giving 5 pockets.

I was lucky to get a 1 trip hi-cube double door container so I always have access to what was loaded first.

Ok no laughing now but collect all the kitty kat treat containers and clean them up and remove all their sticky labels, then I pour all my hardware into them and fill up all the drawers.

It works great slick and clean, open up a drawer and find the exact screws that I will need for each project. Of course, you can stop by any Menards type store and buy all those containers, but I prefer saving a little money for buying other things.

I would use them for bolts/hardware.
I would either fit plastic bins in them or make metal dividers that I welded in

I put stamps in glassine envelopes. The glassine envelopes then go into filing cabinets like those.

They are getting heard to find and expensive

Try posting one or two on eBay, see what you can get for then.

This year I bought a bunch and could not get then new.

You are OK with the one that is upside down?

I have a double wide, and currently store tin snips in one side, and garage scissors and shears in the other. I recently added more tin snips, so gotta move things again. Too stiff for a high use drawer, IMO

Thanks folks.
Good ideas here.
It's gotten cold, so I'm probably going to wait till early spring to decide where to place these and how to use them.

Something to look forward to!

My dad would take empty quart oil bottles and cut the tops off low enough that the base of the bottle would fit in the drawer and keep hardware in them. Everything from rusty square nails to battery terminals were kept in a couple of card files.
