I have had a couple of crescent wrenches for around 30+ years and they held up fine.

Can you post links to these sets? Are they the Taiwanese-made mechanics tools that come in those plastic cases?!

£170 is a lot of cake, and I can't think of any Crescent set I've ever seen that would be worth anything close to that! Maybe they have different/better offerings in the UK, but, I sorta doubt it...

The sets that I've seen here typically sell for ~$60 at Costco and at that price I think they're a great value.

There's two different lines of Crescent tools:

The sets at Costco that are Chinese junk re bagded as Crescent, and the real Crescent tools made by Cooper Tools that you're find at industrial supply stores.

Crescent used to have the very best locking pliers until they quit producing them; it's been a real mystery to me as to why they would do that.

True Costco will often have good tool companies allow the use of their name for promotional reasons. Snap-On does this with certain flashlights that Costco sells. The large cheap tool sets that Costco sells also use Crescent brand name, but are a far cry from the real Crescent tool as made by Cooper. Sams Club sells another large tool set using Channellock's name. Personally I think it's severly detrimental to these quality manufacurers to allow these warehouse marts to use their name on cheap chinese made tools. Because when they fail, all the customer will remember is the name, not the fact that it really isn't that specific company who made those knock-offs.

I think Crescent tool are about the same great quality as they've always been. Maybe the chrome plating on the current tools could use some quality improvement, but that's about it. Cooper hasn't done to Crescent yet what they eventually did to Diamond Caulk Horseshoe and Tool when they aqcuired them.

Apart from the adjustable, auto & chain wrenches and a couple of the models of pliers I don't think they make anything anymore. At least not in the USA.

But the OP mentioned "sets" and I can't think of what else he could be referring to other than those mechanic sets
