For a couple of months now I've been looking for an old bench grinder to restore and replace my cheap, underpowered Chinese made one. Today I picked one up I liked. It's a Creusen, a Dutch made quality bench grinder. Don't know the age yet, but she's defenitaly old enough to vote.
She ran nice, but I want to do a full respray in mouse grey and make her shine again so she'll have to come apart.

And in pieces. I've already sandblasted some parts.

Wow. That grinder looks heavy duty. I don't like restoring things that are in good condition anyway but for this I'd make an exception. Grinders are easier to clean when they're shiny and I like to clean my grinder often.

Thanks everyone. I'll keep you guys posted with lots of pics.

nice !
btw. what´s that for a drill in the stand ? Eibenstock ?
I'll have to get back to you about that.

 Nice, what was the cost?
Had to drive an hour to pick it up and another hour back, so some money for gas. Price for the grinder was 35 euro's, that's around 45 dollar I believe. Pride of owning this one is priceless though!

Keep your eyes peeled for a cheap pair of eye shields. They don't cost a lot and will also add some flash to an already nice grinder.

It appears to be an old Metabo

I definitely would like to add a pair but they seem to be made of unobtainium over here. I would like a cool old pair with maybe some lights in them. Might have to source them from your side of the pond and have them shipped over.

Back to the update. The first batch of parts is blasted and sanded. I hope the paint (Mouse Grey) arrives tomorrow so I can shoot some this weekend.

A buddy of mine made a nice spacer on the lathe so I could fit a pair of wire wheels. Works perfect!

Cleaned the bakelite on/off switch cluster. Makes a nice combo with the mouse (navy) grey. Also cleaned the terminal block which is made from porcelain.

Now I'll let the paint dry for another week before I start to put the base and the motor back together. Can't wait to get her fully mounted on the bench

  1. 3m Scotchpad
  2. sandpaper P2000 (wet)
  3. polish paste (Silvo)
  4. wax

Even the rivets got that treatment. Kinda crazy maybe, but heck I can't stop myself anymore...

You're braver than me; I would have been afraid of going through the finish. Well done, can't wait to see it finished

Between work an other projects the grinder suffered a lack of attention. Today I set that straight. The main body is back together and she is in working order once again. I'm now finishing up the paint work on the side shields and such.

Here is a nice comparison with the old one.

At first, I was unsure with just the gray but the racing stripe adds the color splash I needed. Excellent job!!

And she's done!

I also cleaned the black knobs that hold the tool rests

Fitted a wire wheel on one side. I'm in doubt whether to leave the tool rest of for more contact surface with the wheel

Now the hunt is on for some vintage guard shield with lights in them. If anyone knows of any for sale let me know!

Nice job on the restoration. In Canada used non-Asian grinders are hard to come by and usually are overpriced. I'm guessing it's the same in Holland. So I say you did good with the purchase too!

Thanks guys. Correct remark on the engine parts. A lot of them will be replaced or receive extensive work so that's not a problem. The good ones I will store somewhere else.
