I am building a 30x30 garage with a shed roof from 10' to 17.5'. I am working with a lighting contractor who has suggested the use of 4 lamp 54 watt T5 HO fluorescent High Bay Fixtures manufactured by GE. They suggested two lights in each bay and one light in my 7x24 foot work area. I have countered with asking for their analysis using 3 of these on the short side of the ceiling (were I will be detailing cars and various projects, keeping the two on the lift side of the garage and adding one more for a total of 2 in the work area. Their analysis indicates no need for three in the bays and two in the work area is more than sufficient, somewhat overkill.
I would appreciate your critique of both layouts and your experiences with such lighting. I would have the bays and work area switched separately so I can use only those lights I require at the time.
