My second go at it, 1/8" plate, 1/16 tungsten and 1/16 er70s-6 rod. Number 8 gas lens. I tried various techniques, amperages, pulse, no pulse. Any advice on what to improve? Anything terribly bad standing out? Thanks!

I wouldn't worry with filler at first. Get used to getting comfortable and getting down your movements with your torch. Run a LOT of passes, then when the spacing and movements look and feel right add the filler. Also don't worry with pulse or any of that.

I would jump up to 3/32 tungsten to start (about 130-140Amps) with and a # 10 gas lens..and skip the pulser to start with...and the rod...just puddles, the fusion only joints (don't forget to tack closely). I weld a lot of 065 tube and plate and I don't care for 1/16 tungsten till I get down to O to Thin material (023 and thinner). Your welds are a little grey looking (high heat/not enough shielding) but are a little to cold also ( High bead height, with cold laps at the edges). Be sure you are running 15-20 CFM on the flowmeter..and also, taper out when ending your beads...that crater at the end of your weld at the upper left is a crack , looking for a place to happen. It will take a lot of practice to become good , and a lifetime to become proficient...Shawn

if you got no one teaching you there is two things I highly recommend...1) watch a bunch of youtube videos on it and go to weldingtipsandtricks.com and watch his videos. It will give you ideas of do/don'ts of it.... 2) the most important is seat time... just like drive a stick shift we were all rusty in the beginning but we got better by doing it

I did run a good handful of beads with no filler to start to get a feel for it, but my impatience got the best of me. Gas was at 17 cfh. I had a 3/32 tungsten in it last week when I was practicing, but for whatever reason I put a 1/16 back in it. I'll try 3/32 again my next go at it. I was using a 1 second pulse for a few of the welds just to see how it would help with my timing and movements, and it did seem to help me with that, but may have also contributed to some of the welds that are cold in appearance. I think I have watched every welding tips and tricks video Jody has made, and also picked up the 'Metals and how to weld them" book he suggested. Thanks for the advice guys. More practice to come!

Tip: the more filler you can get into the joint, the less chance of porosity. Welding without filler requires very very clean base metal and even then porosity sometimes happens.

Get your pedal Rhythm down and use mig wire as your filler rod, get your pools a little wider too, stack those dimes boy!

I got a few minutes to play with it some more, just getting comfortable. This was two 1/4" plates I beveled the edges on and tried a weave pattern on. Little rocky at the beginning. Thanks for the tips guys. This has been a fun learning curve. Loooong way to go yet.

Looks good man! Lift off the peddle slower to reduce the pipping on the pool

first picture bottom left is not bad, it is closer to what you want. Your last picture your consistency was good, it seems to be undercut on the sides (camera could be doing that). also you weave/torch manipulation should be tighter.
