A bit long winded, but I thought this was an interesting video.

I've got to give the guy 10/10 for effort, burning up all those nice drill bits. But some of his technique really made me cringe.:wtf: What do you think?

His actions make me think he is reading the sheet that comes with the drill press! He may have just figured out how and when to use certain bits and wanted to share?

Yeah, and it's entertaining to watch. But seeing some of the sharp things he's drilling, at odd angles and without any secure clamping, really made me shudder.

There's one incident near the end of the video where he's drilling though a chisel blade at an oblique angle, with the blade flexing a lot, and you can just see that it's going to spring back and jam when it breaks though.

BTW. Does anyone know what the lube is that he's using in this video. It looks pretty thick, kinda like axle grease, but maybe it's supposed to melt and flow to the tip?

The table isn't even tight. :wtf:

I've said it before, I'll say it again. The drill press is probably the most misunderstood and misused machine tool out there.

Why did you, or anyone else, waste the time to watch this video?? Do you own a drill press?? And if so, if you know how to use it don't watch tutorials. If not, watch carefully and don't critidcze.

ive done my share of "sketchy" work handling techniques, but the **** hes doing is nuts. The thinner the metal being drill the more I worry about it grabbing and find a better way to hold onto it. Vise grips would be bare minimum for the stuff hes doing. not to mention a block of wood under the work.

I just left him a comment on the video.

If that knife blade started swinging around the video could have gotten a lot more exiting.

I can't speak for "anyone else", but I watched it to see how harder material he could drill with plain HSS.
Do you own a drill press??
Yes.
If you know how to use it don't watch tutorials.
I said why I watched it. Please don't tell me what to do.
watch carefully and don't critidcze.
Why not? There are some very bad and unsafe practices on show. I'm not talking about mindless criticism or name calling. To critique means: "to review or critically analyze". So this was never about mindless criticising or insulting the guy, but I definitely think those unsafe practices are worthy of discussion.

BTW. Can I take it from your objections to any criticism that you feel everything he's doing there is ok?

huh.... people should not be doing tutorials if they don't know what they are doing, plain and simple... this guy is ridiculous, he is going to get people hurt by making a "tutorial" where he does a bunch of unsafe and stupid things... not to mention bad technique and bad habits for drilling.

we all look at things we might already know a thing or two about because in the world of mechanics and craftsmanship, there may be a guy out there who can show you a trick or two. this is not one of those cases. criticism is the best thing for a video like this, or any video, without criticism you would have people making tons of videos, possibly with a lot of misinformation and then without the criticism that misinformation gets spread. the only way to police the world of home made instructional videos is through criticism in the comments. if somebody leaves their comments closed in an instructional video, you may want to rethink using it as a reference as most typically will get called out on their BS at some point.

remember in that other thread how we were discussing how for some people it doesn't matter if they have a good or bad set of drill bits with their drill press? this is that guy haha.

unfortunately theres a lot of people that make videos all the time.... and they spread misinformation and bad information like wildfire, it's crazy how people will believe the first thing they see or hear these days. skeptics are few are far between in this modern day.

I hope bro in the video joins GJ. I'd like to help him, rather than trash him.

Video should be entitled "bad drilling technique with increasingly dangerous materials on a cheap drill press"

Whether novice or experienced, please get into the habit of clamping all metal material down, or holding in a drill press vise.

The disaster at about 40:30 (drilling a wood chisel) doesn't even give him pause. He was lucky the column stopped the chisel, he was lucky he didn't break his hand and lucky the chisel wasn't flung towards him or someone else. If it had not stopped he might have had an out-of-balance situation that could tip over a small drill press like that. I don't know if he was wearing eye protection, looked like regular glasses, but hardened metals like the ones he was attempting to drill can shatter. Also drill bits can break and shatter, particularly cobalt and carbide.

Way too much pressure applied at many times. The table might have broken. I could go on and on.

Yea, the first thing I noticed was all the deflection/flexing of the DP table.

Video is a clever and subtle parody. Inside joke by the creator. Not likely someone would drill a chisel, have it catch and spin hitting the camera, and then post the video unless this was a prank.
