Picked this up at garage sale. Always wanted a hook that swivels. Before I use it anybody want to take a guess at what its rated at (weight wise?) Yes I know a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Also.. can I use a "quick link" to attach it to the chain on my engine hoist? Heres a link to quick link you guys know what I'm talking about.

Between your thread and the other guy's thread about the overseas one he picked up, I might have to get one too. I probably won't even need it, since I'm doing a RWD SBC w/ a Happy ****** puller, but WTH. LOL

I've wanted one for a while because a friend of mine has one for his engine hoist. His is A LOT nicer. Someone posted one similar (to my friends) on garage journal that he used for picking up a piece of thick steel. Between seeing the one guy here on GJ use it and my friend I HAD TO HAVE one. :lol_hitti

I priced them out online and the prices are all over the place. The nicer ones I think are close to $100... maybe more?? I think I paid $25 for mine. I couldn't in good conscience buy an overseas one... Every time I think "XXXXX is XXXXX is XXXXXX... its all the same".. IT ISN'T! I truly believe there were some short cuts made SOMEWHERE on that overseas hook. I just can't trust my life with something like that. That's why I made this thread...

Are we expected to guess the size of that hook? Just a bit more information such as the diameter of the attachment ring would help.

Thought about that AFTER I posted the pics.... (stupid on my part)

I wouldn't use the quick link, they aren't even close to the weight rating of 3/8" chain. Use a double clevis type, chain repair link.

Make that your avatar and all is forgiven.

Nice piece. Now, for what tasks are you going to use it, that it's overkill? :lol_hitti

What am I going to use it for???? Honestly I don't know. I bought it because the price was right. This hook is an "older" so I can't pin down the exact load limit from the pdf file that larry_g posted.... I'm thinking 1,000 lbs. is the most I can put on it safely.

do you have a link for double clevis type, chain repair link???? Did a quick google search and I'm unsure as to what you're talking about.

Not saying I disagree with you about using a quick link but link I posted below shows the working load limit at close to 2,000 lbs (if I'm reading it correctly)

I'm thinking that you have a S-322 hook that is in the 3-5 ton range. Refer to page 5-7 on the pdf and check the measurements.

For the double clevis; http://www.riggingwarehouse.com/default.aspx?page=item+detail&itemcode=307-1012889&catlist=1623

The one listed is a 6600lb rated unit but they have others.

Thanks for posting the link to the double clevis. That is what I mentioned. Those quick links are light duty, and should never be used for lifting applications.

Looking at you photo with the tape it looks like a 3/4" shank (top part of the loop where your chain will connect)
3/4" safe load is about 3.5 tons
5/8" safe load is about 2.5 tons

(Safe load is 1/5th breaking strength)

This thing is over kill for your usage. 1000 bps is childs play for it unless it has damage i.e.: elongation from over loading which it doesn't appear to have in the photos. The double clevis is a good solution.

Laying on My desk is a CROSBY-LAUGHLIN model SWL 3 T... It looks newer than your swivel hook, but the measurement from top to bottom is 9 3/4",, so appears about the same size as yours... SWL 3T = Swivel Three Ton hoist capacity

Check out that SWL ? ? That rating should be there.

top loop on mine is 3/4" ; So the ratings that 2oolhound stated fall into agreement
with My SWL 3 T..
