My job is flying me down to Windsor next week and I was thinnking of taking the bridge over and hitting an American Sears in Detroit. You know, the one which actually carries tools (Unlike Crappy Canadian Sears) . . . . and pick up some Craftsman Pro stuff (Cobra Pliers, Line Wrenches etc)

Are there any other places I should check out while in Detroit? ie flea markets or other tool stores? I figured with the automotive business the way it is, I should be able to pick up some Mechanics tools and Lathe tooling / measuring devices for prety cheap in Windsor/Detroit.

I'm looking for Made in USA hand tools, Pullers, Specailty Tools, Lathe Tooling, Precision Measuring Instruments, maybe some electrical stuff (ie good multimeter etc) and maybe more as I grow my list.

Thanks!

I've always concentrated on the various Sears stores around the periphery of Detroit. I'm not even sure if there IS a Sears within the city limits anymore; probably, but I don't know of it.

The few Sears that I have visited that are within 10 miles of Detroit (Fairlane Town Center (Dearborn), a few others) all have most of their tools in locking glass cases. I despise this.

I wish I could point you to a "good" Sears, but the best I have found is in Ann Arbor, 40 miles from Detroit. The selection is decent, but it suffers from typical Sears tool-section lack of restocking, bizarre price fluctuations, and only a select few employees who know what the hell they're selling.

I bet there are smokin' deals in the city of Detroit if you know where to go. I know there's a ton of motor city-area members on here, perhaps they will enlighten you. Then again, they might not reveal the locations of their personal honey holes.

I would look up the area you are going to be in on craigslist for tools. In Detroit area there is going to be alot of really good deals due to the economy.

I was thinking Craigslist. Maybe I'll have to get a rental car with a GPS so I can visit the locals and help out the economy :)

I think the one in Dearborn is the one I was looking at in google maps. I may drop by because I have a couple of things in mind I'd like to get from sears.

There is a used tool store out in Waterford, which is somewhat near by the metro area. They have a variety of used mechanics tools from all the big 3 tool truck companies. I've gone there a few times and picked up some nice deals. The address is:

Geno's Tools
4716 W. Walton Blvd
Waterford, MI 48329
248-674-8665

I would think the nearest Sears to hit up would be in Novi. That Sears usually has the largest selection of tools on hand, compared to others I have been to.
