first, I want to introduce myself.
My name is Arne and I live in Belgium, so don't shoot me when you don't understand what I mean :).
I like te American style of houses and garages and want to build a garage in the typical American wood-siding-style. After watching the garage gallery, I saw a lot of nice garages but I still have a question. How is the cross-cut of your walls. Do you place the sidings directly to the OSB? I drawed a cross-cut how I think it has to be. The Belgian manual said that thair must be 2cm air between the sidings and the OSB. Sorry for the crappy drawing but I formatted my PC but haven't installed my drawing-program yet.:(

Welcome to the board! Siding is normally installed directly on the OSB in the USA. I suppose there are exceptions, having an air gap between them may be a good thing in wet areas - it will let the siding 'breathe' and dry out faster.

edit: as others have pointed out below, there is also usually a layer of building wrap or tar paper in between the siding and sheathing, but they are usually nailed together with no air gap.

arcss, generaly speaking, we "wrap" the osb(boxing) with house wrap first if the garage is going to be heated and then attach the siding directly.

thanks for the info, i don't know yet what i'm gonna do. It depends what the warranty of the materials is. When I start to build, i gonna start a topic in the garage gallery.
@little d, I suppose that you talk about tyvek when you said wrap?

In the UK its usual to cover the OSB with Tyvek (or other breathable membrane) then put 25x38mm battens on the side and the siding goes over that.
That gives an airgap as its pretty wet over here.

Like this.

Then at the bottom, put soffit vent mesh to stop insects from setting up home in there, in this case there wasn't enough vent mesh to do the whole thing (hey, my buddy didn't have much money for the job) so my mate and I put short sections of 25x38mm battens to lessen the amount of soffit vent mesh needed.

Your drawing shows the siding installed in a non-overlapping manner. If installed without an overlap, I think you would need the air gap.

In most US siding installations, the siding overlaps and prevents water from intruding into the space behind the siding.

What you and demographic are posting is basically a rain screen setup - where there is an air space between the exterior cladding/siding and the sheathing on a building. For whatever reason, it never really caught on here until lately. I think part of it is that European builders go for much more air-tight insulation systems than we have in the past. As we're getting into more super-insulated buildings you are starting to see it over here too.

As the buildings are pretty airtight the airgap helps get rid of water vapour as well.
