I have an older challenger style breaker panel and the breakers are getting harder to find to replace. I don’t have the funds to replace the panel out for a newer type and I’m trying to do some research to cross reference the style of breaker I have. I noticed in my box there are a couple different brands GE being one but can’t find this particular style. I installed a tankless water heater a few years back and found some used breakers at the time but now I need to replace 2 of the 3 or maybe all 3 if possible and feasible. I found a couple made by Crouse-Hinds they need to be 2 pole 40 amp but I can’t be sure these are compatible. (Mh240) also have to be slim line style as the fatter ones will take up to much space and don’t have the room left. I have removed a few to make the space for these at the time of installation. Who anyone know other brands that are compatible for this style and or are the Croise-hinds compatible . My house is wired electric and had a gas furnace install years ago so I removed most of the heater baseboards and breakers to make room. I don’t have a lot of room to install a new water heater and the prices are Ridiculous now. I didn’t get much help from the hardware store. But any information would be greatly appreciated except telling me switch it out 😬. I would if I could…..

That design was discontinued many years ago, they were one of the few breaker designs that would allow 240V with a twin breaker, the only one left is GE & they only work in GE panels, the only work around is to use a Eaton BR quad breaker, they are the only UL listed breaker for use in Challenger panels, the quad breaker will require juggling around circuits to make things work. Crouse-Hinds breakers are not compatible with other makes.

I have a couple different brands in my panel box but I can only read the GE logo on one my eye sight isn’t the best with or without my glasses so it’s hard for me to read and the print is very small. I did find one on EBay the was a Crouse-Hinds that had the same hooks on the side as mine. He wanted $20 for each plus shipping. I just want to make sure if it was to good to be true…. I haven’t heard back yet hopefully 🙏 soon and hopefully they match🙏🙏🙏

There's a cross reference list floating around that criss references approved breakers. It usually only comes to play when a panel and breakers are branded under multiple manufacturers or bought out by another company.

Eaton BR is the ONLY UL listed breaker made for Challenger panels, Eaton CL is UL classified for other makes of panels, but it's being a spendthrift to spend extra money for a classified breaker when the listed breaker is the cheapest on the market, GE, SQ D, are not classified for competitive makes, & Siemens is the replacement for ITE, & Murray, Crouse-Hinds was Murray prior to being rebranded as Crouse-Hinds, and the Murray brand was restored when Siemens bought them, later discontinuing them, they are not classified for Challenger.

There are a lot of "will fit" or so-called "interchangeable" breakers out there but very few are proper to use.
