While all the insanity was going on regarding the HF compressor deal, I was keeping an eye on this one.

It originally listed with a $1000 min bid :shocking: and didn't sell, no surprise. Looks like the shroud is damaged and if you click backwards 8 pages (from the original page load), you'll see the pic of the tank with a scratch and what looks like a dent). The label on the tank also suggests that it was manufacturered in 1979, making it a cool 30yrs old.

It was relisted with a $200 reserve and sold today for $557. For a 30yr old compressor with a potentially damaged tank, an unknown maintenance history and a listed unwokring condition.

I know new stuff is generally cheaper in the USA... here's further proof that even the used prices here are insane.

That looks like heavy unit and possibly well worth the 500 bucks even used, The motor alone would cost ya 400. The damage looks minor.

That's a 5 HP, most likely 3 phase, compressor. I've been servicing a similar compressor at work since 1980 (a 7 HP version). The compressor looks identical to ours. We found out that regardless of how good the tank "looked" when we picked it up, it didn't have the markings that made it legal in the states and though the tank was, at the time, 2 years old -- we had to replace it. Made a bbq out of the tank. It was pristene inside. That compressor has run in our shop every day for 30 years without even one rebuild and still fills the tank in less than 30 seconds. $557 would be a smoking deal.

That was a deal. I priced a Develbis (devair) 80Gal 5 Hp HDI compressor the other day.

The head alone sells for 1000. Complete with motor and accessories and your over 2600!

I want one soo bad... The one in the auction may be old, 30 years, but the design is over 60 and is still the current model! parts are still available.

I Do agree with your assessment that things are overpriced on Crown assets. Ive noticed a big change since they went to the min bid system!!! things are nuts.

The other week i had a bid on a miller 250Mp welder. In known running, mint condition they sell for $1500. This one had no whip, was missing parts, and had been stored outside for at least a year and a half!!! Sold for around $550:lol_hitti There are many other examples. Some people are nuts, and focus on the name, not the condition.

I wish that Crown Assets would move away from the closed bid auction and move to a live, ebay type listing.

I was thinking about what looked to be a dent in the tank and then I saw the age of the tank and got to thinking... 30yrs old, that tank must be nearing the end of its useful life, esp since it would have been ridden hard and probably put away wet for much of that time.

Why would a Devilbiss be worth so much? Seems that even IR units are cheaper. :headscrat What do they have over their competitors (their true competitors, not cheap knockoffs)?

I do agree with you though.. it would be better to have a truly competitive bidding system vs the "random guess" system they have now.

Remember, the whole idea behind the property disposal process is to maximize the return to the government, it was your taxpayer dollars that paid for it in the first place, you want to get as much back as possible. If there are people so stupid as to pay too much for the stuff, so be it, you as the taxpayer benefit indirectly from it.

Yes, I know, you would like to be able to "take advantage" of a few good deals occasionally, but look at how much money this bidding process has saved you from spending:)

Sweet, beautiful (and heavy) cast iron! The Devairs are tried and true industrial compressors. Nice slow speed, quiet.

Oh, and theyre still cast and assembled in Canada.(Milton Ontario i think).

The dented tank is a bit of a concern, as its a pressure vessel, but a replacement could be bought at Princess. Unless things have changed PA sells made in canada tanks.

Really, even the new price isnt that bad when compairing apples to apples. 2700 for a north american built industrial compressor is actually the going rate. PA's industrials with a chinese pump are in that same ballpark.

Oh i agree. Just people are dumb. That welder i posted about can be a money pit. Its computer controlled, and wasnt a big hit on the market. I understand that its a good machine, when its working though. Just to even test the thing youd have to throw 3-500 in parts at it. Then it could be an anchor.

Throw in the fact that its been out in the rain for almost 2 years and its a no brainer. I wrote CA before putting in my bid, and even they described the condition as POOR..lol

I understand that closed bid is there to maximize the profits, but live auction could work too. Ive seen tools worth thousands sell for pennys on the dollar.

Just last week there was a Grob 4V-18 metal bandsaw... thing was SWEET. Looked immaculate. I wanted it bad. It sold for around 700? i think, New that was a 8000 + bandsaw! EEK Someone stole it. If it was live, somebody would have come by with 701 (maybe me). I assumed, given its value that the winning bid would be closer to 2k.

Never underestimate the competitive bidding (egos)that can happen in a live auction.

I wouldn`t trust a 30-year old tank. It can look as nice as possible on the outside, but theres no telling what it looks like inside.

You want to talk about a deal....talk about the Beverly B-3 I missed on Craigslist 2 months ago for $60.00!!!!
