Re: Has anyone Ordered one Latley?

I just ordered this unit from Costco --- Has anyone received one of these in the past month. I'm curious if its the same unit as folks were getting months back and if it comes with liners pre-cut?

From the PIC it appears the LOGO is not on since its being sold as a Trinity.

I just noticed they posted the Excel 42 inch for 999 - Does anyone have any experience with this - curious how it compares to the Trinity 41 -

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11275876&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&eCat=BC|114|860|28175&N=4010045&Mo=26&No=0&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=28175&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&Sp=C&hierPath=114*860*28175*&topnav=

Terrain,
Please post up your impressions of the unit when you receive it.

Will do - it will be my first box of this size/quality. I was looking at the Trinity 27" unit but with its removal from the costco site yesterday my decision for the 41 was made easier :) My local store has the 42 CPS in black so I hurried up and ordered the 41 stainless since after seeing the black unit I knew what I did not want. I just hope its the same 41 (quality charactericts etc...) that has been written up in this and other review threads.

Looking at folks pic's with the thing filled I think I'll need to plan several trips to Sears to pick up FILLER material.

Costco Trinity 41' Pic's

I purchased the Trinity 41 from Costco. I ordered it on a Thursday and it shipped and was delivered on a Monday - helps that the company is also in CA. As other foks have mentioned the Trinity folks called the day before the item was due to be delivered and provided information about what to check for when the item arrives etc...

Costco says Curbside delivery - I was expecting them to drop it at the curb --- but I was happy that the delivery guy rolled it right into my 4 car garage w/out question. He even took away some of the boxing material! Moving into a new house I have had lots and lots of freight deliveries over the past month and I have to say this one was by far the best/easiest.

As you can see from the pic's it comes in two pieces and within minutes was bolted together. The two pieces were packaged very well and arrived w/out any damage. The assembly hardware including the weels are all of very good quality. The included pre-cut liners are very nice and convienent.... - I was all set to love everything about the chest until.... I started removing the protective FILM...

My only complaint is "HOW DO FOLKS GET the STICKER" material off around the drawers? I assume that the blue/silver sticker that coats the entire unit comes on all such units. Is there a trick to getting this off around the drawers?

I had some time to compare the CSPS unit Costo is currently carrying in the stores and IMO the quality is not comparable. For one thing the drawers and pulls feel very cheap on the unit in the stores (black powder coat 41) - it felt very similar to the cheapest Craftsman models with lots of wiggle in the movement. My closest costco put the unit 6 feet up on a shelf so I never really got a good look at it - from 6 to 10 feet away it looks fine but when they placed it on the ground and I was able to compare it to the Trinity 41 I am very glad I went with the Trinity.

The unit is a bit taller than I expected but that's a good thing since I'm over 6" - but I could see shorter folks needing a step stool in order to use the top areas.

In terms of quality I spent lots of time looking at the Craftsman professional model (but at $1999+) - in fact this unit's top is very similar although a bit deeper (20 inch vs I think 18.5 or 19). Of all chests that my local sears has on display the Crafstman Pro is the closest - they have a stainless Craftsman non pro model but IMO its not in the same class of quality.

Now I'm just working on filling it up -

Hey I am glad you pulled the trigger and got the trinity. On my box I moved all the drawer pulls to get the stickers off, they are just attached by philips screws. It looks like on yours the pulls are different shape now, but it might be mounted the same way.

Poor - yeah - so far so good. I will take a look to see if I can remove the pulls - once I get the film off I'll be a 100% happy with this unit.

I just picked one of these toolboxes up myself, I was searching the web to see reviews or info on them ( which is how I found this post :D ) to see how they stacked up ( no pun intended ).

I have to agree these toolboxes are well constructed for what they cost, the only complaint I have is the stainless outer shell could be thicker as it will dent easily but for the cost of this box being around $700 new compared to the thousands of dollars of the others out there it is a GREAT deal. The drawers slide easily, lots of storage room (I fit the tools from two Craftsman 3 stack boxes into this box and they are actually laid out so I can see them ) & it sure is shiny -n- purdy  sitting in the shop .

All in all I am VERY happy with my new toolbox, especially considering I found mine still brand new wraped in the protective plastic for $400. :drink:

This "trinity" box looks almost identical to the older CSPS models. Can anybody who has seen both in person confirm this? If this is the case, I'm going to be picking up a second box to put right next to my CSPS box.

Beware when you move your CSPS tool chest from Costco. Our moving company was a little rough with it getting it down the ramp (most of the tools were removed, so it was basically just the weight of the chest itself). The bottom of the chest caved in. We are putting a new sheet of steel under the chest and the casters need to be replaced. Not a fun job!

Update:

They have a 27" version at Costco now for $499. There is also a little 3-drawer portable toolbox version for $80. The drawer pulls on the 27" seemed to have changed a little.

Back around 2004, one of these stainless upper and lower tool box sets was on display at a Costco here, and I spent a few minutes looking it over. It was thin and flimsy. The spot welds holding the bracket that held the top end of the hydraulic support arm to the bottom of the lid had broken.

Several months later I saw it there again, still sitting there at a discounted price because of the broken weld.

From speaking with some of the importers for these brands the problem is this. The big companies are trying to keep the boxes in a certain price range. Yet the cost of steel and shipping continually goes up. So the only way to keep their profit margin and not increase price is to lower the quality of the box.

There are not many of the mid grade or lighter duty boxes that I am aware of where the quality of the box they are producing today is the quality of the box they produced 5 or even 2 years ago.

It is always a good idea to take a good look at the date of the product reviews. Also one really needs to take into consideration who is using the box and what they use it for.

Where some would consider a 41" CSPS box to be a very large heavy duty box better built than they will ever need. Others would load it up take it to work and wear it out in short notice.

Hey Guys,

I have one of these boxes and need to get two replacement clips that hold the drawer slides together.

These are the little black clips that keep the slides from extending too far and dropping ball bearings.

Do you guys have your paperwork for these boxes still ?? If so, can you please post or PM me the companys contact information.

Thanks

I have a box that came from Sams 3 yrs ago, & I have already had to bend the tabs at the back of the drawers twice to keep the drawers from going in too far (they won't lock if they are too far off). I guess I will have to come up with another way of stopping them next time, I don't think they will re-bend again without breaking. Otherwise I am prety satisfied with the quality & construction of the unit.

Sams-Walmart is bad about cutting the cost, so manufacturers have to cut costs somewhere. I used to be a small engine mechanic, & subscribed to a magazine called Outdoor Power Equipment. In one issue the CEO of Snapper refused to do business with Walmart because they wanted to slash the prices even if it meant they had to make a unit of less quality. He told them to stick it!! They refused to cut their quality even for a big buyer like Walmart. Ever since I read that I have supported Snapper in any way I can.

Also, my wife's grandfather used to run a hosery mill, & one year there had been floods in the midwest & Walmart came to them & asked them to sell socks to them at their cost so they could help the flood victims. The mill agreed & started making the socks. Later they found out that Walmart had just suckered them, as they were selling the socks at their normal mark-up.

The 41" stainless is back on sale at Costco for $749(?). They're under the name trinity. I think I'll risk it at that price. If it stinks I can find a way to get it loaded up and back to the store. I too wondered why only 11 drawers on a box this tall.

lets see a pix of the tab
if there is space on the back side of the tab you could screw in a small plastic or metal block that would be your replacement stop. if you have room top to bottom you could just screw in a verticle strip of aluminim to be the new stop

I would suggest looking at the boxes your local professional techs use.

How long have they had them?

How have they held up?

What are the likes/dislikes?

You can claim that you are only a weekend warrior, and that you don't need pro-quality....but how many garages showcased in this forum are emulating the real deal.....commercial shops?

Two or four-post lifts, 80-gallon two-stage compressors, etc....

If you're gonna talk the talk, you have to walk the walk.

I have earned the right to my opinion.....:)

Flame suit on.

In the pro shops it is pretty much an ego thing " Keep Up With The Joneses" Ya know I got a SnapOn "I'M Cool" well this dude payed way to much just for the name and has to make an appointment with a truck driver if something goes wrong. Plenty of other products for half the price will do the job quite well, assuming you care for it OR a SnapOn well no matter what ya buy if ya abuse it ya might have a problem..

There are plenty of products that don't carry a NAME and would be the source for ridicule in a pro shop..

I have also earned the right to this opinion since at 66yrs I have been in a shop environment for close to 50 years and still working. Name Brand MEANS nothing --- as well as the opinions of pros as they differ tremendously.

Ya aint earned no rights to nothin' when it is opinion, -- including me it's just opinion.

Never had a tool box FAIL in all those years. Craftsman, 1955 Gerstner, 1943 Union, Kennedy, Waterloo etc got at least one of each and they ALL have good and bad --- Ya just need to get what fits your budget and needs.

It seems the opinions of the folks here including the weekenders and hobbiests are very much just as valid as a pro.

Sorry don't talk the talk very often but I have "WALKED THE WALK" as you so arrogantly put it:beer:

Does anyone have any updates on how these boxes are working out? Costco has the trinity ones on sale and I am thinking about ordering. Was going to do the harbor freight one but these seem nice and get delivered (I don't have a truck). The smaller 27 inch one seems to have more drawers. The 41 looks nice but the drawer layout seems unconventional. What do you owners think?

I have the hammerhead and a csps box from Costco. I also have the more recent Whalen SS workbench. they have held up well. but, I think the trinity boxes are several levels less than the ones I got and cost way too much. I wouldn't recommend them.

Mmmm now you finally got my mind set firmly on which s.s workbench I should go after. So you r saying Whalen is worth buying than trinity. Just wonder if you can tell me the width of the longest drawer of Whalen one. Will there be room for long torque wrenches to be fitted in that top drawer? I plan on selling my 26 inch toolchest- uselessssss

i can't measure for you until i'm back home. but, i can tell you that i use the center top drawer to store all my torque wrenches except my 3/4" drive one that is 45" long. so, yes, it will store long tools. 2 drawers down (same width), i store my 25" breaker bars. Considering how much width space is left, I would say that a 33" breaker bar would fit too, without storing it diagonally. BTW, just so we're clear, this is regarding the 72" long SS workbench made by Whalen for Costco.

i've found the older (no longer available) Costco SS boxes by HammerHead and CSPS on Craigslist quite often. In fact, my CSPS box was gotten for free after picking up other CSPS boxes, restoring them, and selling them for a profit; after flipping 2-3 of them, i bought the CSPS box I kept with the profits with change left over.

of the 3 SS boxes I have, i rate them as follows:

HammerHead > CSPS (they are mostly identical, but the HammerHead had better casters and the folds in the sheet metal were very crisp and perfect, where the CSPS had smaller/cheaper casters and some of the folds in the sheet metal are a little "rounded")

CSPS > Whalen (totally different design, so that aside, the CSPS was T304, as is the Hammerhead, where the Whalen is T430, the sheet metal is a bit thicker on CSPS, the drawers are powder coated instead of painted)

Costco still has the Whalen 72". But when the "tool box" season comes around, they usually sell some other nice boxes that's not on the website. Last year they had a nice 36" wide Homak that was pretty heavy duty in blue color. I would not buy the Trinity stuff.. the drawer configurations **** if you're storing small tools like sockets/wrenches/screwdrivers.

just my opinions...

I have the Hammerhead box that Costco used to sell over a decade ago. Recently I've been looking at buying another SS box like the Hammerhead. The only place I know that sells the exact same Hammerhead box is garage-toys.com but they want $1386 for the combo plus about $200 for shipping. I was thinking that the Trinity might be a good option considering Sears has it for about $900. But you don't like the Trinity? Is it 18G steel?

Here's the Hammerhead: http://garage-toys.com/noname21.html

Hey... just noticed you're in San Diego... that being the case, I would just look for a Hammerhead (a bit more rare) or a CSPS box on your local craigslist. I've seen them pop up there several times a year. there was one just last week and a 56" wide one (CSPS SS box) about 3 weeks ago. I've picked them up for $200-$400, refurbed them and resold them. It's how i got my CSPS box for free.

That does look great and a nice write up!

At first glance I was wondering why you put a restaurant freezer in your garage!

First thing I'd do is order a "SUB-ZERO" decal for it! : )
One of the mechanics where I worked got a Costco stainless box for Father's Day. A few of the bullies teased him about his kitchen cabinet. The weekend body shop tradesmen took the box and painted it black at the request of the box owner.. All was well on the Western Front.
