Taking possession of the new house today, so stay tuned for updates!
At 36 I'll finally be getting a 25x32 attached garage, and breaking ground on a shop. Details and pics to follow!
I'm pumped!

Didn't get much moved in today, but got all of the formalities out of the way. Snapped so e pics of the current space:

Pretty much a blank slate. I especially like the stairway directly from the garage to the unfinished area of the basement where I'll have a workshop/hobby area.

Made the move this past weekend. I'll get some progress pics up as soon as I disperse the rest of the junk filling the garage.
I'll be needing some serious help from GJ in deciding how to add on to my shop space.

Nice setup!!! What kind of hobby work?

Your electrical panels look a lot like what I have. There's a lot going on there. Is that a standby generator transfer switch?

I also have a rainsoft water system that looks just like that. If you've never had one, they're not as complicated as the sales/service guys would like you to believe. Basically just like a pool filter with different media.

Good to know!
Downstairs will be woodworking/home improvement and everything from aquarium/vivarium building to electronics dabbling.
Garage and future shop space will be automotive. I'm going to do a protouring 60's pickup.
That is a transfer switch. It runs to a generator plug in in the garage.

Ok, so I'm talking to a couple builders this week. I have a few options on building placement. All options would be in the 24'-28'x32'-40' range.
Here is an overhead of the property, and I took a couple screenshots including the Google scale for reference.7296ba3c7c6b196e0ba687c42b00c8b2.jpg482e651202345e0969fd71a17506e848.jpg7d1a0c54e3989e4b4915a5fea28816c8.jpg

Basically my options are to attach to the existing 25x32 (inside) garage as an extension or an "L", or detached at the end of the driveway.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why one would be better than the other?
If attached (leaning toward this), I would like to put an overhead door between the existing and new.

No opinions? Spoke with two builders today, so they should be coming out soon to give me an estimate.

No opinion really... I like a detached shop for noise reasons but attached usually has less building restrictions.

Got to work on the garage a bit today. Most of it is organized, but I think I'll build some overhead storage down the road.
I had planned to put up the diamond plate pegboard, but since the whole wall was already covered, why waste it. I picked up some Rust-Oleum metallic and painted it silver. Paint covered very well. I'll be able to hang the cabinets when it's dry.874195664da07640173340b348110c59.jpgeb24adc82076fe7c44063b18d87ba977.jpg

Beautiful property and the existing garage is quite nice. Really tall ceiling there; someone had the right when this home was built! Can you change the existing garage door tracks to high lift models to open up the ceiling area?

I like the "L" design, coming off the end of the attached garage and would build it tall and deep enough for a motorhome/trailer stall with a 14'-16' ceiling having room for a mezzanine for storage. Never seems to be enough room for that. Any zoning restrictions?

Started this thread seven months ago when we were moving. Well, today I pulled the trigger on my pole barn. Materials are paid for, I just have to iron out the delivery details.

Hardware package is being delivered Monday, lumber not long after that. The trusses are a couple weeks out.
Soon I'll actually have something to post about in here!

While waiting for the never ending shop build, I decided to start dressing up the existing garage a bit. My goal is to move most storage to the detached garage and keep the attached garage as a clean shop for minor work and washing/detailing. Going for a sort of industrial/race shop look.
Weekend project was the entryway from garage to house. It started out very simple when we moved in: 155a33f400e63aed0ea9796d626a3fcb.jpg
The garage of course filled up very quickly as I moved all of my tools and equipment in. The refrigerator started in front but wasn't convenient at all:afebda4118d9666d18d3838d3ae1356c.jpg
I put together a temporary platform to raise the refrigerator and gain floorspace. I thought it would make the fridge more convenient, and we rarely use the freezer..... Wife hated it. Best pic I had:
b0c861105a2e7688ae1aa649c43ffef0.jpg
I decided to push it back against the wall and raise the deck to eliminate the step from the house and bring the fridge to a better height. I can now put the trashcan under it saving valuable floor space. I'm going to cover the rest of the exposed old wood and disassemble the panel to stain everything black then reassemble.
44177f53aff96884bac4d6cfaa9709ec.jpg

A lot of BS about a refrigerator and entryway, lol. Can't wait to get started on actual garage items.

Made a slight change to the truss design, should be here this week. I'll have close to 16' to the center of the scissor trusses. The walls are just shy of 12'.

Finally getting to the point that I can do some work myself. I placed two of the three sandstones for my retaining wall by the pond. Left just enough room to get the lull through! (12')

Probably could have gotten a size bigger on the mini, but this got it done without causing more damage than good.207f1e02bc4ccf1f1caf7e1217e0ad3c.jpg2d903fc4e0a882cf879946dc44cd86d6.jpg
Tomorrow I'll set the frames and piping, then it's ready for the concrete prep.

It took me about 5 hours with a quick dinner break to dig the pits and unload the cart by hand. An extra young back to trade off between the excavator and the cart would have cut time substantially.

I'll be sore tomorrow.....a69103648b0a2b8a3be71cbc87b89fa7.jpgcb603b1fc3a5066440b7e5bb4120d0ad.jpg

Everything here has the mark of quality, promising a fine end result.

By the way, I admire the entry, stairs and fridge solution. You got that job right in the end.
