Cub cadet 3184, finally doing hydro fluid

So this afternoon/weekend I have to push aside the Drift Breaker to perform some overdue maintenance on the Cub. She’s pushing like 800 hours and has developed a transmission leak. On these the hydrostatic transmission is bolted to the differential transmission. Pretty sure the latter is what’s leaking…

Anyway, the plan is to pull the reservoir and check that gasket.. then if I have to pull the rear transmission plate and check that gasket. Never done this before, and there’s assembly differences between the exploded diagram on parts tree and the 3000 series repair guide.

I guess we shall see which is correct. <fingers crossed>

Got the fender, seat pulled and holy hell! The nest of oily bits of leaves, dirt, sticks, etc packed around the hydro pump. And it’s only been like a year since I cleaned this!
Pulled all the bolts for the pan and rear plate, and drained the oil. Very clean oil I might add. But it’s a closed system and a I’ve been adding to it for months.

Lots of old rtv… someone had this apart before me. Also found metal in the bottom. Not a lot really but enough, noticed pitting on one side of the differential teeth. I assume from it catching and gringing the metal particles. Also not too bad, it’ll definitely work fine for prolly years to come. I just have to not wait 8 years between filters.
I had meant to put a magnet inside the steel cover and forgot. Think I’ll poke it up thru the drain plug hole.

Interesting. I owned two of those old hell-for-stout machines and never saw the inside of the transaxle.

Check the number of the the engine oil and transaxle filters. I may still have some NAPA on the shelf. In the GJ philosophy of paying it forward, you can have them for postage and packaging.

I def appreciate it. Last week I’d ordered a tube up kit off Amazon, came with an air filter, oil filter, fuel filter and a pair of spark plugs.
Everything looks good save the air filter, it was about half an inch taller. Not a real problem other than a had to redo the bolt that holds everything down.

I’d bought no name brand 10-30 a few weeks back. I use it in my oil can anyway.
Everything done except filling the axle, just letting the rtv cure

Well all back together and no leaks!
