Cup grinding wheel for heavy grinding

I saw this I think on youtube somewhere so I decided to try one. I bought a used 5" x 2" x 5/8"-11 - 36 grit grinding cup off of ebay for $10. This combined with a large 7" Black and Decker grinder makes for a serious metal removing machine. I used to use just 7" disks and they work well but you can really lean on this cup when you want to.

Plus it keeps me from leaning on my 4-1/2" grinders too much and making them last longer using them for lighter jobs.

I use these all the time on a similar grinder on metal and ceramics -- they are great. Watch out though -- the machine will kick _really_ hard. You're not using a guard (I don't either), which means it's even easier for that grinding wheel to kick back, hit you, and wrap up in your clothes. Once I was grinding in just a t-shirt (too hot here...) and it kicked, climbed the t-shirt, and hit me in the chin...not good.

Agreed on watching out. I have been looking at one of the 7" guards to see if I could make modifications to make it useful. We don't get too crazy hot in Wyoming, so I at least have a heavy shirt over top the T-shirt.

I have been bit in the leg by one of them... Cut down a second guard and welded a custom guard for it shortly after, strongly recommend it.

Grinder injuries are graphic, google some if you have a strong stomach.

We use the same wheels for finish grinding switch frogs. I wish they had a nut on them to help remove them from the grinder.

These stones do get clogged up easily, so don't forget to dress it once in a while

I bought a case of 12 of those off ebay for $6 and free shipping a while back. I run them on my 1.6HP Atlas Copco 6600rpm pneumatic angle grinder. They make quick work of big jobs. I've always heard them called a snag or snagging wheel for cleaning up sprues in a foundry.
