Anybody have any recommendations (or warnings) on where to purchase a Cupola? (one that just sits on the roof).

Looking for high quality, maintenance free.

There are numerous companies on line but I would like some first hand experiences.

Thanks!

No first hand experience other than homemade, but what is your roof pitch? And I doubt you have any Amish around where you live, but give a roof pitch, and I'll see what I can find online for you.

If you can, post a pic of what you want to put one on.

Thanks kevin,

No shortage of on-line cupola companies, but I'm looking for someone who has bought, received and been happy with the quality. Most of the on-line companies have no physical address and very little details on their construction so its hard to determine what your actually going to get. I'm a little paranoid since this is going to be around $1,000 (for a 36").

I have found one local company that makes them (in Annapolis, MD) so I can drive up and check them out, but wanted something to compare them to.

Putting it on a new monitor barn that's reaching final design (finally!).

Here's an image of the barn. The cupola is 36" which is on the lower side of the sizing scale based on ridge length (30'), but I think its the right size.

Not sure if I want windows or louvers on it.

The Architect is creating the permit/construction documents now so I want to have specific information on what gets installed in and on the building.

Then 4 months of building permits and I can start in the spring.

I see your in Fairfax Va. If you take I66 to Gaineseville, then RT29S towards Warrenton for about 6 miles, there is a place on the right side that sells sheds, garages, and cupolas. Their store is just past the light with Rt600.

Nice looking barn.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm hoping I can put my hands on one before I buy it and now I have a couple local choices and on line choices that actually give you details.

As some have stated there is a place off 29 in New Baltimore, Capital Sheds, that sells Cupolas. They have a few on display.

You could also check Byler Barns in Catlett off of route 28. They might have some as well.

I just recently had a pole barn built in Warrenton by Superior Buildings. They used the Metal Plyco Unit. I personally didn't install it but I watched them assemble it which only took them about a hour if that long. Sure it wasn't the first time they have built one though. I have attached some pictures of the unit and installed on my shop. My building is 40x60x12 for reference to my 36 inch cupola with curved roof.

When I was having my pole building built, I really wanted one of the glass pane model cupolas, but in the end, I went for one of the metal louver kind due to a big difference in cost. I thought it would be nice to put a light in it and maybe multi colored lights for Christmas. Since I live next to an elevated railroad, maybe it wouldn't have been a good idea.

Here is a picture of the 36" Plyco with glass that we installed on a 30x40 garage. Just like everything else, they are easy to assemble after you do the first one.

We installed a functional Cupola in our shop roof. Before installing it, we lined the inside with plastic screening so bees and bats would not get in the building. It is copper roof with white plastic outside. (PVC I think.) been about 12 years and still looks good eventhought the copper has dark green now. We bought it from a place called the Mill Store. Not sure if that is a nation wide chain. It was in Milford NH

Are these cupolas functional for venting? Seems to be an ideal place to put a ventilation fan.

don't even need a fan. just open path and it draws.

op don't forget if you buy a prebuilt one on that size roof depending on the size you might need a small crane to get it up there. just something to remember as that's up there.

I'm in CT so my place is useless to you.
I am going to order a louvered cupola. My garage starts in three weeks.
The glass ones seem silly.
You will never be able to clean that glass.
Just my opinion obviously.
The bug screen behind is a definite must have.

Add a computer to read GJ and a urine disposal tube, could stay up there all day.

I built a 30" (or so) functional Cupola for my garage about 25 years ago. It is wood and has a nice curved copper roof. I have refinished it once and it's due for it again. If I did it again, I would build it from something that is maintenance free. Bit more $ up front, but a lot easier than spending a couple of days on a 12-12 pitch roof especially at my age.

We also have a Plyco. Metal, louvered, and does actual venting. Not sure how it's quality compares to others. I do know that the thing is nearly 30' in the air atop a 9/12 pitch roof. If I have to get up there and paint it before I die I'll be really ticked off. . .

A lot of good choices. My house is in a historic overlay district, so everything has to be (or look) like its authentic. Not sure they would approve the all metal plyco or similar cupola.

Ive seen some on line that are made of a paintable "aztec" like material with either a copper or steel roof. They look more substantial than the all metal type. This version would be acceptable in my situation as long as the material closely resembled wood. They come in three pieces (curb, middle, roof) and assemble on the roof.

Love to have a working cupola for light/ventilation but I want to install it and never have to deal with it again.

I assume you are in the Clifton Area. I grew up not far from there. If you need something that has to fit into that historic area check out some of the units that have a Capital Sheds in New Baltimore/Warrenton store. They have some with windows and also some with copper roofs that would fit that area well. If I find myself in that area in the next few days Ill snap some pictures and upload them on here.

I would, and I'd install a dumb waiter for my wife to send the cold beer, so she wouldn't have to hoof it up a set of stairs.

She just rolled her eyes when I held the laptop up and showed her what I wrote.

I have worked a bit with AZEK and some of the other PVC materials since I built my wood cupola some time ago. If I built it again, that's what I would use for the exposed "wood" surfaces. It would be built over some kind of structural frame probably made from PTL. PVC trim materials are not too good structurally. Another shortcoming is that they have some limitations as to what color they can be. If you like white, you're in business. If you want a darker color, not so much. They don't like getting hot so you haver to be careful about the color or it'll over heat. AFA the hysterical commission, PVC would appear exactly as a similar wooden structure especially if you paint it which may seem to contravene the primary reason for using it, but the stuff I used for my porch balustrade was WHITE!! and I painted it with a bit tamer shade of white. Used Sherman Williams "Super Paint" over a lightly sanded surface and it is doing fine after seven years. Filled the screw holes with Bondo which was another reason for the paint. It also helped with the cut edges of the PVC. Yes, there are special matching caulks and stuff, but that's what I wanted to do.

Ended up buying an all PVC "Good Directions" cupola. Home Depot had the lowest price and free ship to store.

Since we painted the barn black (which is a no-no for painting PVC) I had to sand it and apply the darkest specialty PVC paint which was a very dark green but looks black way up on the roof.

Came out nice
