I've seen this mentioned a couple time when guys are inquiring about CL /eBay SnapOn listings. How would one go about finding out if there was a lien? Are the boxes serial numbered? If so, I doubt if the seller would be willing to give the numbers out.
Just curious.

From what I understand you call SO corp. and give them the serial number and they'll tell you if they have a lien on it.

However I don't believe they track stolen boxes or boxes where the buyer stiffed the local dealer.

If the seller claims the serial number tag fell off then you can be reasonable sure there's something fishy going on with the box.

I tried that when I was looking at a used Snap on box and was told by the person at SO that they did not track that info by only serial number.

I generally ask the seller for the numebr so i can verify the manufactured date by the code on the back (serial number ) you would be surprised how many do actually give it up. then i can find out if one of the dealers around here is about to lose some money.

I can't say about other brands, but every newer Snap-on I've had with the stick-on serial tags has had more than one tag. The other tag is usually found on the bottom inside panel. You, of course have to pull the drawers to find it.

After reading some of the more recent threads about this, it makes good sense to me to ask for the serial# and call Snappy before even going to look at a used box.

I have added it in a few times myself.
one guy tried to get over on the cornwell man. he sold him a used mac box for 7500 bucks ( it was a monster of a box ) and two weeks later the kid put it on craigslist. Cornwell man just went and took the box back from the kid.

On several occasions when I have called Snap-on credit to ask about a box, they have told me that they can NOT track a box by its serial number. If you give them the owners name, they will tell you if that person owes money. So just to cofirm....SOC tracked a box for you with no name, just a number???

Is this perhaps a service they will only provide to dealers? If so, seems kind of silly....and I was told they did not have the capability; they were more than willing to give out information about a customer, it makes no sense that they would have withheld this.

The only serial numbers I've seen on my boxes (including my last) were stamped on the right rear of the box. Never seen a foil tag, and I would think it would behoove them to do that as it can be obviously peeled off...

It would make sense to pass on an ad that the seller wouldn't give you the serial number.
Before reading these threads I would have never thought that someone would try to off load an unpaid for box, :shocking:or anything else for that matter.
I guess it's just the honesty in me

OK, how can you tell the date a box was manufactured from the serial number on the sticker?

The old boxes had the date stamped on them

EXACT same message I got when I called. I even asked my dealer and he said he can't access any info on a box by SN.

Here is the go to thread on this, I learned a lot in this discussion.

the roll cart I sold today had the letter P at the front that would indicate 2010 I will email the tool storage guys to have them break it down farther.

you would be shocked at all the stuff that a lot of dealers do not know. I am not scared to ask a question and sometimes you get really good info.

I make sure each serial number on every box is registered so if a problem ever arises snap on knows the number.

You'd have a harder time repossesing an unpaid box if you didn't. But just because you register the number does not mean that S-o Credit can do a search by that number. When a GJ member buys a used box, it's often hard to know who the original owner is, it could have changed hands a few times. Since SOC and UCC searches can only look by name, there's no way to be sure a box is fully paid.

As dealers, you should demand that SOC develop this capability. It would help you to find lost, unpaid boxes. Matco does this...no reason SO shouldn't.
