Current recommend for torque wrench calibration?

So I got what I thought was a screaming deal on a 3/4" CDI torque wrench on that auction site... opened it up today and it looks like new and has a recent calibration certificate. Difficulty: it showed up set on 600 ft-lbs. So I'm assuming that the calibration certificate is meaningless at this point, and I don't have another one to test it against.

So who should I use? I've used Snap-On for my smaller ones, but I don't know if they will do a CDI one. I'm assuming I will have to ship it (that'll hurt!) but if there's anyone local to me (I live near IAD and work in Beltsville, MD) that'd be splendid.

thanks!

I believe that Fastenal does torque wrench calibration as one of their industrial services. No idea on price, but could be worth talking to the manager of your local branch.

Hmm, I'll have to call on Monday, there's one a short drive from the house... in fact had I read your message a little sooner, I just drove by there.

How accurate do you need it to be? If it were me, I'd do a simple accuracy check at three or four places in its range using a vice and weights.

Question, and if I need to start another thread someone please tell me. I've read on getting them calibrated or DIY. But if it is found to be "off" how do they get them back "on"?

Angel Repair's prices seem in line with industry average. Precision Instruments charges $45 for 3/8" and $55 for 1/2" if I remember correctly. I would use a place like Angels who specializes in this type of stuff. The calibration is only as good/accurate as the people doing it (gripping wrench correctly, using one smooth pull, etc). Good luck.

I would go local to save on shipping costs. Just google torque calibration in your area, there has got to be a few places close by.

I only found one place a while back, was considering having them do my 3/8" Snappy because the truck guy at my friend's shop takes forever between vists, they never responded to my inquiry and I ended up letting the truck guy do it anyway.

Snap-on owns CDI and will calibrate their torque wrenches at the repair centers. Have your dealer send it out if you're not sure.

Called Fastenal, they want $60 CW only or $110 CW and CCW.

Beckley is a little far to drive for me but it might still be cheaper to ship to Angle if their price includes calibration in both directions - does it? (I sent an inquiry, but figured I might get a quicker answer here.)

I'm just frustrated because my screaming deal is now only kind of good if I really need to spend $100+ :(

Have you got any real reason to suspect it's way off? The spring being wound up isn't necessarily a sign of it being so - it might not have been that way for long.
It will cost you nothing to put it in a vice with a few weights hanging off it - and you've save $100 and the cal cert is actually still valid.
