Hey guys,

So I'm about to need to get an air compressor. I had my mind made up on this one : http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc...splay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

UNTIL I asked my friend who's dad owns a mini storage unit what the deal was with this giant air compressor that's been sitting outside for the better part of 2 years and hasn't moved. He said he didn't know anything about it so I asked him to poke around and see who's it was and if it wasn't claimed, I might take it.

So I went and took some pics to see if you guys could give me some insight on it and whether or not it'd be worth it to move it and what it would take to make it 100%. It's actually only 34" x 32" so it's only slightly larger than the Husky above except it's twice the holding capacity and twin stage. Can someone enlighten me on the benefits of the twin stage?

Here are the pics. Let me know if you need any more info on it. It looks complete minus the 2 open threaded holes in the side and the electrical which seems someone just cut it out of wherever it was hardwired which doens't seem to be a biggie.

I'm looking to put this in my garage to use for car work/fab/ and painting. Can someone give me a briefing on what exactly this baby is? I got the 120 gallon and 7.5hp thing but that's about it. haha.

Thanks guys.

Curtis is a good compressor, and that's a good sized one. Look it up on the Curtis website. The motor is 3 phase though, as it has 3 lines to it on the label. A single phase motor of that size is rather pricey, and will require mucho amperage to start and run.

I would call Curtis Customer Service at 314-383-1300. To find out what it will take to get this running in your garage.

How did you know it was 3 phase?

And can you not hook up 3 phase in a house? Is this suitable for use in a closed in space?

I have been involved in industrial machinery for quite a few years now, so I deal with it in my work.

The motor plate shows a wiring diagram in the lower right corner, showing 3 incoming lines. Those are the 3 phases. Also it tells how to switch rotation by switching the wires, another 3 phase indicator. What is unusual is that I could not seem to find a 3 phase marking on the data plate.

You will need to read up on 3 phase motors and phase converters. The subject fills multiple books. Normally, a 3 phase motor will not run on residential power because the third phase (hot wire) is not present. A phase converter allows the operation of 3 phase equipment on residential power (240 single phase), but compressors are a different breed, due to hard startup loads, and often.

You will have to define "closed in space" more accurately. It will provide heating for a small room when in operation, for reference. Compressing air generates lots of heat.

haha closed in space meaning a 20 x 21 garage. Is this something I should just walk away from and get the Husky? Thanks for the info.

How much would this sell for? I guess I could just leave it at the mini storage and try and find a buyer maybe?
