Would like to know which direction the flywheel should turn on a Curtis
model C 80 duplex compressor , I talked to a tech at the Curtis 800 line
and his best guess was ccw , he diden't have any info on file because it is
so old , I asked him if it would harm the compressor if it turned either way
he said no it would not , just that the flywheel needs to push air to it to
keep it cool , I'm sure I'm wrong but it looks to me the way the fins on the
flywheel are , it should turn cw to push air towards the crankcase ?

If that were mine I would pull the inspection cover and see which way the oil dippers faced, assuming it is a dipper system. Run it backwards and you may not be oiling the rod bearings. Just an educated guess on my part.

no neat sig line

From the Masterline PDF.......

"CHECK DIRECTION OF ROTATION
Close the disconnect switch and start the compressor.Observe the direction of rotation, which should be counterclockwise when viewed from the flywheel side of the compressor on all models. For single-phase units, the direction of rotation is determined by the motor nameplate instructions. and is adjusted at the factory. For three-phase units, if the rotation is incorrect, stop the unit and interchange any two of the three wires to the motor and the disconnect switch. This will reverse the direction of rotation of the motor and compressor"

Likely not a dipper, or pump, but a large ring which sling oil as my D96 does.

My dilemma is I don't know which way the original motor turned , when I received
the compressor it was not included although the drive pulley was with it , so I found
a 5 hp 220 single phase to run it

I've never seen a small reciprocating compressor pump that didn't blow cool air across the cylinder fins. Even other model of Curtis pumps. Due to the laws of physics, there would be very little if any cooling if the flywheel was to blow air against the wall and some how draw air across the cooling fins without any sort of ducting.

You want air to blow across the compressor. The flywheel has fan blades. The fan blades will blow air in either direction depending on which way the flywheel is spinning. It's quite clear the fan blades will blow air towards the compressor if it turns the CW direction.

In the future think about a fan fin as a scoop and think which way would the fin have to be moving to scoop air in the direction you want it to go.
