Hey guys, starting to dig into my curtis c96 compressor I brought home a while ago. I know there's a piece broken around the flywheel area, but i have no idea what it is. Can anyone knowledgeable help me out. I even have a manual now, but still don't know. Any other advice, info would be great if you know it.
Thanks

That was a mount for the flywheel mounted unoader system. Yours is missing, which is a good thing, since they were fussy and troublesome and added another layer of maintenance you didn't need.

I'd just get a pressure switch unloader setup. Incidentally, that looks a LOT like my D97 pump. I've pulled it apart. It's very very beefy. Save that pump!

Also my heatsink finned pipes have some bent damage to them. are these easily replaceable or is it acceptable just to bend them back as best as possible and go with it.

Getting ready to repaint soon. Can anyone recommend a good primer/top-coat setup? Looking to bring this back to factory quality or better. Not sure if rustoleum would work or if i should step up to an expoxy primer and maybe Sherwin Williams topcoat. I'll have a cheap spray gun and small compressor to do the job.

Also, i'm a little confused by the valve fitting coming off my tank (pump to tank tubing run). Running perpendicular to the main line, you have a spring assembly and then a small copper tube that T's off and runs down a to a blow off valve I believe. Don't understand why it exists and what it's designed to do, and if I even need it.

The spring assembly is the check valve and the hose goes to an unloader valve. The check valve keeps the tank pressure from bleeding back to the pump, and the unloader valve releases pressure from the pump so it doesn't start against a full load.

Makes sense. What would keep the unloader valve from releasing while the tank is filling though?
SO that might have been the DIY approach when the unloader broke off the flywheel?

There are different types of unloader valves. Generally, on smaller compressors, they are a part of the pressure switch, it releases the pressure when it switches off.

So dug into this whole missing centrifugal unloader a bit more. Noticed I still the big cast iron piece still attached to the drive shaft (note pictures). It's completely loose and seems a little concerning. I imagine they didn't remove it because removing the flywheel is a total pain in the ****? I'm in the middle of getting the pump prepped for painting and removing the flywheel sure would make things easier. Is it worth the hassle? If not, What should I do about the 'extra' piece?

Also, my cooling pipe fins are bashed in quite a few spots. Makes me think that maybe the flywheel wasn't balanced for some time. Though I suppose there could be other possibilities. I'm spending the time to bend them all back to original position, but definitely concerning.

I say ignore the pc of broken casting, and just repaint the pump. As for fixing the fins, straightening is completely acceptable
