I'd mostly be concerned about parts availability. Check the model number on the pump and check with Curtis.

Curtis USED to be the equivalent of Saylor Beall or Quincy, but the company has been sold to Fu Sheng Inc. and parts availability for older models is almost nil. So to break your question down into two parts: Is that a good compressor? yes, it used to be, anyway, and Is it a deal for $280? maybe, but probably not.

I have the same pump on my Curtis. It is a horizontal 120 gal tank 5 hp.
Actually I had no problem getting all the parts to rebuild the top end on mine.
In the colder weather the flywheel style unloader sticks on it. Plans are to use a check valve and unloader pressure switch.

I would not hesitate on buying it if it where me.

The data plate is on the rear bearing cap. Yours looks to be painted over. The pump model number should be on the data plate.

Newbie here... I just purchased a new FS-Curtis 60 gallon, 5 HP 2 stage compressor from a local dealer in Dallas. This thing is very quiet and works great, I finally got to use it last weekend. If you need parts let me know and I will get you the info on the dealer, family owned business that has been operating 40+ years. For the price, I think you got a good deal.

I got the 200 amp service. Now that I generally got my electrical issues sorted out I'm thinking of doing the 100 amp sub panel to power the garage that way I don't come up short powering compressor, welder, lighting & outlets. Right now the garage lights are ran off a breaker in main panel but thinking of separating out the garage entirely.

I ran 200 amps to the side of the house and split it at the meter. My house is all gas, so 100 amps to the house was plenty and 100 amps to the new garage. The older garage next to my new one has a separate meter. In that garage is my Kellogg-American compressor, which I will have a tie-in valve between the two buildings, once I get the air lines in my new garage. I've been thinking of running PVC...............just kidding.

Should I get get some sort of unloader as a precaution? Recommendations?

Mine was messed up,as was my check valve......so i replaced the check valve, removed all the old unloader parts and put on a new pressure switch with the unloader on it.Works like a dream.....my curtis from years ago had a problem with the unloader in the colder weather, but otherwise fine.
