Curtis compressor motor size?

I have a Curtis 4-1/2" X 2-5/16" two stage compressor.
Model CD-9690-46996. The flywheel(pulley) is approx. 16-1/4" O.D. with two belt grooves. The tag states 400RPM minimum operating speed.
I would like to power this with a single phase, 1750 rpm, 220 vac motor.
What H.P. motor and motor pulley size would be appropriate ?

I did an internet search with that model no. and got nothing...

Might want to post a photo. I bet some guys here might know just by looking at it...

Since it has two grooves on the flywheel, I would guess at least 5HP @ the lower end RPM

As far as the motor pulley, use this equation:

1) motor pulley dia. x motor RPM = pump pulley dia. x pump RPM

I also could not find info on your compressor. Above is the specs on some Kellogg compressors of similar bore size. They are of different strokes so you may have to do some guessing. In what I could fine on curtis was that 5hp is the smallest they make now so a good guess would be a 5hp motor and then monitor the current draw on the motor to select the proper motor pulley. Go to the advanced search function and search for 'current' and user name 'larry_g' and you will find a few discussions about this subject.

Re: Curtis compressor motor size? Here is a picture of my compressor

Here is of the compressor. I am trying to determine the h.p. of a 230 VAC single phase, 1750 rpm motor to power it. Any suggestions?

Go with a 5 HP. Sheave it for 800 rpm (~7" motor sheave). Monitor amp draw to set max pressure. Should be about 150 psi.

I have that same compressor. C96. Mine has a 3hp. Motor on it. The different size motors that fit it all just affect c.f.m. I have a chart put out by Curtis that shows all the variables in motor, cfm. Fyi 5hp = bout 17 cfm. My 3hp.= bout 11+. More than enough for me. Great machine,

Not having the specs I would guess 5 HP. The bore is 4 1/2 and 2 5/16 inch. The stroke is not listed. For 5 HP try turning it 800 RPM.
To get the motor sheave size multiply the compressor sheave (16.5 OD) times the compressor RPM (800)= 13200. Now divide this number by the motor RPM (1750)=7.5" sheave. Do not try to use a 3600 RPM motor. The sheave will be too small an the belts will not last long with that tight of a radius.

Found this thread whilst hunting for info on a similar pump.

D96, 4.5 - 2.3125 * 3.5 Nominally 5HP. 500-800RPM

D96A variant is still in use in Curtis ML5 outfits being spun at 620rpm for 4.44HP, 19CFM@175psi.
