Custom air compressor setups?

Hi all,

Just joined up, I am starting the build-out of a 20 x 24 detached 2-car garage.

Since the structure is somewhat limited in size, I want to make every effort to conserve space. I have been gathering parts to assemble a new air compressor as me current one decided to lock solid. As such, this has given me a opportunity to build a unit that does take up so much floor space. Working at a motor company I have access to almost any motor I need, I have the switchgear. I just need to get a pump, and I am in business.

I was wondering if anyone had done anything unique with their compressor set up, such as mounting the tank on the wall, or even up in the ceiling to clear floor space.

There is a post about showing off your compressor. It was a few months ago.
Putting it in the attic seems to be the way to go for space and noise concerns.

Cool, thanks, I took a look at that thread, some nice set-ups in there.

This leads to a second question, can anyone think of a reason why the storage tank on a compressor could not be at or above the level of the pump, given that the plumbing was appropriately routed?

You can put it above the pump but you will have to have a water drop on the comp output or water will collect and run back into the compressor. It could be piped into the tank drain if done right. One auto blow down can be set up to clear all drops

I saw that picture too and thought it was a slick idea, but I was concerned about the heat up in the attic. Before I got my 5 hp Quincy, my 60 gallon Craftsman never shut off while I was bead blasting. That loud beast put off an awful amount of heat.

Thanks, that is pretty much what I assumed. My plan was to place a drop off the compressor outlet, then run another drop from the tank drain, placing them side by side on the wall. Since I was just planning on keeping it manual, I can just place the two valves next to each other.

make the output drop large enough to contain a good amount of water. Hydro lock is bad news to a compressor.

I wonder if a 4' drop of 1/2" or 3/4" would be enough?
