Parkerizing starts off as black. The level and depth of the black color depends on the metal, the compounds used and how the parts are processed afterwards. The green color some parts get is said to be from a reaction to the cosmoline used for storage after manufacture.

Never heard of a dryway tub...

Sorry about that, meant drywall tub. They were on sale at Menard's, was faster to just weld two of them together than order a plate and fab up a small tank. I edited the first post.

Received a couple of PM's asking about the silicone plugs I used. I buy them from these guys. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NKMX27S/?tag=atomicindus08-20 They come in handy for lots of projects.

Here's how I take apart the batteries. I trimmed back the plastic wrap to make easier to see.

The outside shell is crimped over on the top. There's a plastic disk between the side and top cap.

Take a pair of pliers and peel back the crimp.

Pull off the metal top then remove the plastic disk. A pick works good for this. Then pull out the carbon rod. Be careful because it's pretty brittle. Then remove the second plastic disk. That red stuff is just grease, you can wipe it off with a paper towel.

Now just dig out the manganese. There's a paper liner on the inside of the battery, try not to tear it so you don't end up with bits of paper in your solution.

There you have it, battery harvest 101. :D
