I don't get how crushing cans facilitates putting extra weight in. It seems like crushing wouldn't leave any space; you'd have to put the sand in one grain at a time. If you put sand in first, then the can wouldn't crush, and should obviously have sand in it.

Like ratdoggy mentions, a spoonful of sand in each can will make a huge difference, not that you're going to get rich but it's a liar or thief's scam.

If you were ever to stop by the firehouse, I'd show you the weight difference between an empty carbon fiber SCBA bottle and one filled to 4500 psi. Maybe once I get my trailer of of winter storage and can get my NOS scale, I'll post some pictures of an empty bottle/full bottle.

Couple ounces of sand or dirt in several cans at 45¢ makes a big difference

Theres a big difference in my little 10 pound CO2 cylinder between empty and at 830 PSIG full.

I once had someone ask me how much pressure my acetylone B tank had in it. I told him, "Approximately 200 pounds". He then asked how I can pick it up with one arm. Did I mention he was a science teacher?

I made that in the last few weeks. It's fugly but she will crush right down to 20psi or so. I'm right around $40 and some time into it, and if I get around to welding some studs for the switch it will be way more finished.

It's just a 2" ram with a 6" stroke that I got off of eBay for about $20. The body is a 3" exhaust pipe with a cut out for the can to go into and a stop welded in the end. Where the can sits I bolted in a rubber stop off of a bobcat, but the same could be done with a hockey puck or something similar, I just had This sitting around

The end of the ram is just a sprocket I had sitting around, it would be just as easy to weld a nut to a large washer or flat plate. The air valve is just zip tied on for now, I didn't have any studs small enough to weld on so its good enough for now.


I also picked up a smaller 1.5" diameter ram with a 6" stroke to make another one if I wanted but this one will be easier because there are threaded bolt holes in the gland end of the ram so I could just make a box where the can gets crushed and bolt the ram to it instead of covering the entire ram and running air lines inside.

No deposits here, my scrap guy doesn't like them much at all because they aren't worth much and leave a lots of sticky residue and attract insects, doesn't want them crushed top down, side on is ok, told me its because they won't bale up if they are crushed first and then the can recycling places don't want them.

Not worth much? Here aluminum pays fairly well as scrap goes. What does he want if he thinks aluminum is not paying? Just copper and titanium????
