I have a set of us c-man raised panel wrenches that I never use. They are just too short for my liking. I was thinking of cutting gaps out of the box ends of all of them so I would have a huge set of line wrenches. Has anyone ever done this before? If so how well do they work? I imagine they would work just as well as dedicated line wrenches.

Looking at my Craftsman RP wrenches and line wrenches shows there is more meat on the head of the line wrench.

Maybe the normal wrench cut as you describe may flex under load. :dunno:

I've had to do this occasionally at work. They did what I needed them to do, but the stuff I work on doesn't involve rust, dirt, or grime like found on cars.

I have some home made ones. No point in making till needed though. Used a sink basin wrench on one a while back. I am not to proud.

I picked up some craftsman metric RP's that someone did just that to. couple were heated and bent flat as well. they sucked. did not work well at all as flare wrenches. I traded them in on new ones. Get a good set of properly made flare wrenches and save those for the road box or sell them...

Thanks Gungatim that's what I wanted to know. I have ratcheting line wrenches and regular one but I figured I could make some for my home garage. These were the first wrenches I ever bought and thought I could put them to use somehow. I will probably keep them to modify if need be or for abuse situations

Yeah. keep some junk wrenches around for altering when needed...but not before hand. That said, there is no outward support on a regular box end wrench to keep from spreading if cut,,,or even cracked. So no, they will not work for anything that requires torque. They may work on nice shape brass compression fittings or stuff like that, but what is the point? Even cheapo Harbor Freight line wrenches will be much much better and for like $8. Not worth the time.

I have an old WT Grant I cut for something, it worked well. I had some pics of others but cant find them. Its a sneaky ****** and you can see it floated to the top of the tubing wrench drawer.

I picked up the metric and standard sets at HF. They are beefy, and work well without flexing. Probably less expensive than cutting a single good wrench.
