Custom Size Service Door

I need a new rear service door in my garage, its an odd size or height I should say. 72" x 32" I want a steel insulated door nothing fancy. Is this something Menards can handle or do I need to find a local door company? I really don't want to spend a fortune on it but it needs to get done asap. Anybody have experience?

Just figure out what existing rough-opening exists and order to that size- or bring the rough opening back to standard.

FYI, a 72" x 32" is a standard door once you include the jambs on each side and the top.

For some reason was reading it as 7'2".

Maybe it's not 72" I'll have to double check that. I can always make the door smaller but not larger, although I really don't want to go any smaller...

I think some of the people above must be reading your 72" as 7'2" or thinking that a standard door is 68", when in fact it is 6'8" or 80". You definitely have a shorter than normal door. I'm 6' and I would bump my head on the door frame of a 72" door.

Anyway, back in the 1980's I worked at a lumber yard that had a custom door shop, and we could order cut down steel doors. I have no idea anymore on how it was done or what it cost, but it could be done.

Check with Menards, but also look in your local yellow pages for a millwright company or look for a commercial lumber yard where the contractors order their materials.

Thanks guys, yeah I was starting to get a little confused myself from the comments haha. I'm pretty short and I just about hit my head on the damn thing Lol. Ill look up some millwright companies and see what Menards says. I just want to make sure I get a good door, I purchased a pre-hung solid core door for my bathroom from Menards a few years ago and had a lot of trouble getting it to swing and latch properly. Actually im still having some issues today with it.

You may wish to re-measure your height. If it is truly only 72" tall, you might need to cut down a taller door.

72x32 is a standard mobile home door. Is this a carport by any chance?

My daughter has one that size in her basement level condo in a 100 year old Boston brownstone. She just had a remodel done and had that door replaced. She got one with 1/2 glass and made of fiberglass I think. I'll see if she knows where they got it or if the contractor handled it all. I know it is factory made.

I just got home and measured, I don't know why I had 72 in my mind? Anyways it looks like the max width between the 2x4s is just under 35" and the max height before I hit the soffit outside is 77" I'm not sure if I can go that full 77" but the door jamb should be able to right?

I needed a special size door for a house I own with a walk out basement.

I priced one at Menards, but the local lumber yard (who is usually very high priced) undercut Menards price by something like $100.00

I ordered a custom size door at Lowes. Went to the desk by the doors and then they called the guy that knew how to order them. He made it simple by giving him the rough openings. We don't have Menards, so I couldn't check them.

most places can make you a custom door, Just do your self a favor, measure in more than one spot to make sure. No one will take a custom door back because you measured wrong or your door way is out of square.
