Has anybody made their own custom wrench rolls? If so I would appreciate any tips or pictures. I have some worn out denim jeans that I will probably use. I was thinking about having each slot hold 2 wrenches - one regular and one ratcheting.

Two in each pocket and they will wear against each other.

I like the basic tool roll, rectangular material, fold over each of the long ends to make it wider instead of longer, and put tool pockets in the top and bottom fold. Fold down the middle from side to side, then roll up.

Old jeans should work, maybe keep some belt loops and bar tack (like belt loops are attached) the tops of the pocket divider seams.

The wife of a friend of mine has made up some goodies for him.
She makes up patterns on paper, laying the tools out and measuring up enough of a space for each one.

I didn't actually make them. My wife did. I have two rolls. One metric the other SAE. There are two wrenches of each size in the rolls. I believe that this one is the SAE set. I roll them up and wrap them wit ha bungie cord before throwing them in my pickup toolbox. I've been using them for years.

I have a couple of them that my dad actually made for me many years ago. One is from a scrap of old vinyl upholstery, the other was made from piece of canvas. They're probably 30 years old and I still use them all the time.

They're constructed about like the ones toolmutt posted above - just lay out your tools on a piece of fabric and figure out how much you want in the roll and how you want them arranged. You can put other things in them like screwdrivers, socket wrenches, or whatever.

Knothead,

Thanks for sharing that bit of information with us. Got any better ideas? Let's hear em.

I suggest you talk to your local boats shops.

I've got a good friend that heads the service dept. at a local large marina.
Every year a portion of the old boats get new summer boat covers made which means the old sunbrella or usually high end custome fitted canvas cover gets pitched. I keep all nylon straps and boat shop gets the quick connect strap buckles back.

I just ask for the old canvas, then drag it home, make patterns for what I need or draw a sketch and cut out the seams and take the fabric back to the cover sewer (they use a sub-contractor) and he makes what I need. A half dozen tool rolls and about a dozen sunbrella tire cosies (think giant canvas tire condom that covers a stack of four tires for the many sets of tires I have in my garage and basement).

Fabric is free, you cut off the sun damaged parts (or turn inside out if only light fade) and it's com. grade usually. Only cost is sewing, and if you do it yourself, win-win.

If you can get to crashed cars cut out a few exploded airbags. Break them down into panels and use that instead of the denim. Mine is badly made and dirty as heck but no wear holes in over 5 years of everyday use.
I have more kevlar material waiting to find the proper tailer to make the new ones for me.

My toolbags also have kevlar liners in them and refuse to wear through despite the numerous pointy things inside the bag.

Now that's an excellent idea. I never considered airbag fabric. That is some really tough stuff.

i prefer a hair pin style ring .i used to make them till harbor freight started offering them in a two pack for 1.79 a pack. i will say that mabe a custom made roll might work better than the plastic rolls some wrench sets come with .

I used to use those rings, if they are like carabiners. I didn't like the way they were rubbing inside the box end of the wrench.

I use both rolls ( canvas or leather ) or a length of heavy wire. I will post some pictures if I ever get my camera fixed....

I use both rolls and trays. It depends on the application. In the garage the toolbox is only three steps away from the project and the trays work out very well. However if I'm in my truck I have to keep a LOT of tools in a much more compact area. The rolls let me pull the wrenches out and roll them out on the tailgate to form an almost instant wrench rack.

I think I put in a picture of my wrench rolls earlier. I keep two of each wrench next to each other. That way I can grab both of them for fasteners with nuts on them. Saves time.
