Custom Wrench Trays

I am looking for some help on how I could make some custom wrench trays. I personally can not think of exactly what I need or at least how to find what I need.

I have a 3.5 inch tall drawers that I would like to fill with wrenches. Instead of the normal lay out the drawer with wrenches and cut into foam, I'd like to do something different. I'd like to make 2 pieces of plywood or similar and then mount the wrenches to the boards either with some sort of clip that the wrench could be easily removed from or either into foam which I would cut out for the wrenches.

I figure the boards with the wrenches would be around 1 inch tall maybe a little taller and I should be able to fit them both in the drawer with plenty of room to spare.

I'd also like to make the boards hinged onto each other so I could lift one up in the drawer and then take what I need. At the same time I need some kind of hinge that is a quick release of some sort so that I can take the drawers out anytime if I need to take on with me somewhere.

At the same time I guess I could do it without the hinges, so I basically need help on where to find the hinges that I need.

If anyone has any ideas on how I could find the correct hinges then please let me know. Or if you have better ideas on how to organize the wrenches in the drawer then please let me know.

Thanks, Stephen

Google harbor freight "wrench it to me". Lowes has wrench rails. Ernest. Etc.

Also search

Wrench organizers site: garagejournal.com or
Wrench organizing site: garage journal.com

Enter in either one of those text strings into your search engine.

I have a great idea, but I'm not sure at the moment what they are called. We used them in the aircraft lighting industry and I believe we called them "battery clips" but they come is different sizes and smaller or larger than some batteries. They will hold a wrench fantastically. They may have been used to hold circuit cards in also. I'll try to remember the name or see if I can find them on the 'net. I used to use them on different fixtures to hold punches. A wrench slips right into them and they will hold a wrench tight. As soon as I find the name I'll post it up. They come in all different sizes.

I did a BING search for Fuse clips and come up with all sorts of ones that look the same or close to it http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=fuse clips&qs=n&form=QBIRMH&pq=fuse clips&sc=8-10&sp=-1&sk=

They couldn't cost more than a few cents a piece I wouldn't think.

It shows them on here at this website http://www.alliedelec.com/keystone-electronics-3531/70181614/ for around $0.15 each, so depending on the size, you're looking at $15.00 or less for 100 clips. I know that over the years I have used hundreds for different types of clips to hold tooling on different fixtures. And they don't wear out unless they are abused by twisting them rather hard or something like that.

Back in the 70's when I worked for Mack trucks in Chicago. I saw and copied using tractor air hose springs. Drill holes half the height plus a 1/4" front and back of you drawers, cut the springs to a length that stretches the springs, that fits your drawers. Use cotter pins for eyes threw the holes in drawers to hold the springs. This isn't for those who are all into how pretty their boxes look.

I prefer this style of rack. You can still easily read the numbers on the wrench and see if one is missing, but they take up considerably less space. There are lots of variations of this style.

Although I understand what you are asking, I don't have a clue what kind of hinge might work for you. I personally prefer racks for my wrenches and use a combination of purchased and homemade racks. Check out post 61 on page 4 of my shop thread below.
