Cutting and welding in the bedroom...

I'm fabricating motor mounts, and I'd like to do a modest amount of cutting with an angle grinder and stick welding in my extra bedroom without destroying it too much.

My thought was to just throw down a big fire blanket on the floor and be mindful of where sparks were going to fly. Is this naïve? Does anyone else have experience with this harebrained scheme?

Why oh why would I do this, you ask? Well, climate control is lovely, and I don't want to pull the parts inside every night. I would do the actual cutting/welding outside, but it's time consuming to get the subframe and motor I'm making mounts for positioned properly, and each adjustment I make will involve 10-20 minutes of setup and teardown. The piece is awkward, and I expect much trial and error to get things aligned properly.

TIG welding, yeah, maybe. But a good drip can easily go through a fire blanket and start burning the floor, so I'd do more than just lay down a blanket.
Any other sort of welding and grinding, no way. Use a sawzall and do your cutting cold. Take it outside to weld.

This is one small project. It wouldn't take much to put a whole sheet of metal on the ground and wrap the whole work area in fire blanket or some other barrier if sparks were just flyin' everywhere. Once things are tacked up, I can do the rest elsewhere.

I spray painted a 3' plastic model in a spare bedroom years ago. Used a huge drop cloth pinned to the walls and floor. Still got over spray everywhere.

No matter how well you set up drop cloths, be prepared to find a fine layer of metal dust on everything for months to come.

The worst is the grinder imo. Metal dust is going *everywhere*.

In a properly equipped shop I won't stick weld inside. Too smoky. If the job requires it I'll tack it together with tig weld and then pour the '18s to it outside.

The romantic hills of central Umbria, Italy,
There are reasons that welding and machine shops have concrete floors and not expensive hardwood...

And for climate control... you know you can always put an AC or Heater in the garage...

Nonetheless, have fun explaining to both the insurance adjuster and the fire marhsall... well... never mind. Pass the popcorn.

Ok I will bite.

You live in LA? How much climate control do you need? I think we all beg of you to stream it live, I will join facebook for sure then.

I wonder if your insurance will cover the potential fire, water damage when they put out the fire. Do you have Farmers by chance? I can't wait for the commercial and hopefully hear JK Simmons says "yup we covered it".

I am just thinking of how many shows that will replicate this in their story line....

By the way, I think it is a very bad idea to do this inside your home.

Place sheets of Masonite down first then fire blankets. 4'x4'x1/8" is perfect. We did this on a gym floor.
With stick those sparks are gonna go crazy,
Try to surround area with suspended fire blankets. Something is better than nothing.
Any glass will be vulnerable too. Those little sparks leave a dark spec that you gotta look close to see . Bright sunlight accents them.

I have always wondered how the massive wildfires get started out in Cali, now I have my answer.

This is why I don't own rental properties.....

No ****. A link to this thread should be posted in every thread where someone asks if they should rent their house out or sell it. I can't imagine the thought process that even leads up to the point of asking this question on the internet.

I've got to go......I decided to move my chicken coop into my spare bedroom as it's getting too cold in Phoenix to feed them outside. I put plastic down on the wood floors to catch their ****. My lease only specifies no dogs or cats without written permission from my landlord, so I should be ok.

If you rented a bigger house you could raise pigs AND overhaul transmissions in there, too!

While I probably wouldn't do it...I am not the boss of you thus you can do as you please...

Earlier this year I helped an older gentleman move some items in the back of his old run down house. The guy is a hermit and I have never ever been passed the kitchen in this place.

He needed a hand with a box that was too heavy for him alone. Passing by one of the bedrooms there happened to be a 1969 ZL1 427 Block, Rotating Assembly, Heads, 6-71 Blower complete with Hilborn Injection. He purchased all this stuff back in 1969-1970 with the intention of putting it in his 30 Ford. He recently turned down and offer on the block for $25K. And I have no reason to doubt him.

He also has a 1967 427 Tri-Power Convertible Vette he purchase new. Next to that is a 1961 Fuelly he purchased new, sold and later bought back. These however are "stacked" in the Garage...not the Bedroom.

I really want to know what is in the rest of the house...

When I younger ohhh about 10 years ago or so, I installed my own sub panel with multiple 220v circuits in a rental house/garage I was at. Luckily the landlord either didn't notice or was impressed enough with my conduit skills not to ever bring it up. I did take it all down when I moved...

I would however not attempt to STICK weld (of all things) inside a spare bedroom.

Why can't you do it outside??

My Brother in law Danny rented his house out to a man he went to church with seemed like a nice guy. He opened a lawn mower repair shop IN THE House. Danny did not know what was going on as it was by word of mouth that he was getting his business. When we finally got him out the whole house had to be remodeled. He had a tear down room with parts washer and all in one bedroom. One was his rebuild/assembly room. And the third bedroom was the paint room. Carpets were foll of grease and oil. No written lease ne recoarse. What a mess.
Sorry I know I said I was only going to watch. Pass the popcorn!
