edit: if I get a gas chain saw can you hold it horizontally without messing it up?

Sorry, you are not qualified. The saw will be fine but you would be putting yourself at extreme risk. If you are not prepared to hire help, use the bow saw with wedges or an axe.........

A meter or so sticking up out of the ground makes a great lever for pulling the stump.
Shovel and axe dig in and break / cut the roots as you can then a winch / pull / ****** from the top of the stump and rip the stump out of the ground.

I have done this before and works pretty good. Some hard labor to dig up the roots and chop through them but not to bad. I use a truck or a HD come along, not those cheap little things, if there is another tree close by I can hook up to.

You can get yourself killed or injured if not careful.A tree dropped on one of my father's friends,a broken leg and collapsed lungs.Luckily this guy's brother was there helping out and called 911.Never cut alone, have someone on hand if anything happens.

Every real man should have a chainsaw.

Go out and get yourself one. Read the manual, front to back several times, and then again, if necessary. Cut only with a clear head, without distractions - no cell phone, nagging wife, drunk brother-in-law, mp3 player, etc. Pay attention to what you are doing, always. Hold the saw like a man, without trepidation. Be cautious, but not fearful. Wear some eye and ear protection. Keep the chain sharp and properly tensioned.

If you get tired, put the saw down. If you can't keep your focus, put the saw down. When you're done, put the saw down, then revel in your manhood.
