Cutting Duct

I don't mess with sheet metal often....
Replaced a boiler. Redid the duct.

Have bandsaw on hand - figured it was meant for -thick metal - not thin

Ended up using snip to cut the duct. Some of them I got nice and clean. Some others.....maybe it's technique or lack of, but I had sod little shards in some areas I filed off. Normal or with experienced hands. snips would have one continues clean cut.

Don't close the snips all the way when cutting,that makes it easier to avoid meat hooks.

Buy a cheap HF or other brand electric shear for that one off job. If it lasts through the job, it's paid for itself. The next time usage is all "free."

and don't back up in the cut , keep your ships snug to the material being cut

Snips come in red, green, yellow which means one cuts to left,another cuts to right and one cuts straight. Then one is made cut round sheet metal pipe, then theres another that cuts flat stock kinda like straights but makes longer cut. Brands is Wiss and Knack I think whick maybe around 25.00 ea if you do this every day or if your an installer.

The Knipex hand nibbler makes an excellent straight cut. It is harder in doubled-up sections like the lap at the seam. To get it started, I cut a hole with a Hougen Hol-Cutter on the waste side of the line.
