garage is 15+ years old and has just a small floor floor drain in center of garage. after living here for a few winters i believe that water runs away from the drain actually and have never even noticed the drain wet or damp. The floor is pretty much flat.

is there a way to cut a new "trough" instead drain the runs across the floor instead of just the 4in drain in the center of the garage?

like this style....

You could rent a concrete saw and cut the trench drain you picture above, making sure it crosses into the current drain. That would be a lot of work and expense, plus you need to dispose of the concrete you remove. If you only have occasional water a good squeegee might be a much cheaper alternative. You also might be cheaper to fix the source of the water intrusion... check your gutters to make sure they drain properly and possibly add a french drain outside to redirect water.

Before you start cutting the floor, you should check the elevation of your existing drain to make sure that it is deep enough to work with the system in your picture. If it works, then you would simply determine your drop location and layout your cut lines. After you get the components installed where you want them, use a nonshrink grout to tie them into your existing concrete. Remember to put something on the top of the drains to hold them down because they will want to float when you grout them in.
